There's a reason those calling for the Dems to "move to" the center trace the party's decline back to its turn toward wokeness (rather than its turn toward Wall Street).

If/when Trump strikes Venezuela, I hope people here don't feel the need to perform a ritual denunciation of Maduro and just oppose the act of aggression.

Right. Thiel is a big investor in Anduril.

Doku gives me, a Liverpool fan, the most headaches. No one quicker w the ball. Semenyo should be the list.

Having just reread it, I think it underplays ideology and the extent to which Israel has become a cultural issue, but I would stand by the thesis.

A big factor - biggest imo - is the role that Israel plays in US imperialism, similar to the role that KSA & Egypt play. US uses these states to advance its interests: crushing democracy, securing oil, etc. Wrote about this a number of years ago.

It’s Not Just the Lobby
The US supports Israel because it furthers American interests in the Middle East — not just because of pressure from the Israel Lobby.

I didn't mean to give credence to the claim, quite the contrary.

True, yeah. What was I trying to saying is left cannibalization/wreckage will be more difficult under Mamdani, given his broad credibility on the left.

But you can see difficulty ahead on policing, for example, where he's opened himself up to legit criti (esp with Tisch collaborating w ICE)

There was surveillance footage that, according to some, showed the the perp had onJewish garb. Hence the chatter about false flags. There'll be lots of criticism of Mamdani from the left, some valid, some stupid/offensive. I think the groups spouting the latter will end up marginalizing themselves.

On the other hand, we'll be able to compare prices in the government grocery stores to those in Gristides, where a box of cereal is like nine dollars.

I was a fan of his -- my org had worked w him on Not on Our Dime! -- but to my discredit it would be months before I took his candidacy seriously. I didn't think there was a chance an anti-Zionist could be mayor of NYC. Grateful for the young and unjaded people who got his campaign off the ground.

Seems like the virulent anti-Indian racism growing on the right is under-discussed. A key plank of groyperism etc
November 7, 2025 at 6:55 PM
I'm aware -- I wasn't defending Dems, just pointing out that opposition to the war was hardly a position confined to leftists, knee-jerk or otherwise.
November 7, 2025 at 5:10 PM
I think this would qualify as a knee-jerk reaction.

Yglesias: "In an irresponsible-but-probably-typical manner I just took my cues from the fact that almost all of the leading Democrats seemed to be backing Bush on this."

"knee-jerk leftists"?! A majority of Dems in the House opposed the War on Iraq. No knee-jerking needed.

yeah the right is unified in its anti-Black racism; only anti-semitism is a wedge issue.

Note to all the Democratic politicians with aspirations who are coming out with statements, emails congratulating Democrats across the country for their well deserved victories but leaving out a big name from NYC - we see what you are doing. It's petty, pathetic and we will remember.
New Jersey and Virginia have chosen well by electing
@mikiesherrill.bsky.social and @spanbergerforva.bsky.social as their next governors!

They are proven leaders who won by focusing on what matters most - how politics and policy can make everyday life better and more affordable.

I'd argue that the GOP is able to use cultural issues like trans rights when Dems aren't focused and credible on economic issues. In other words, the best way to protect rights and advance a culturally progressive agenda generally is to persuade voters you'll protect their material interests.

The idea that people are primarily upset about the genocide that both the Democratic and Republican parties are supporting - financially, militarily and politically - because the Chinese have warped their fragile minds with Commie beams, is apeshit stuff. Obviously insane crackpot shit.
