Have they folded on something they were the deciding vote on? That’s the big part of Pelosi’s success. She allowed just enough defections that still didn’t prevent a bill from being passed or changed the result.

Ehh, a common critique about Pelosi was that she wasn’t a good messenger either and had “gaffes” taken out of context like “We have to pass the bill [ACA] so that you can find out what is in it”.

The good news is that it’s relatively easy to take over a political party in the U.S.

What I’m more surprised by though is no campaigns to abolish senates in the state legislatures. Well overdue for all states to follow Nebraska in that regard.

Don’t understood the theory of how one does it though. Abolishing requires every state to be onboard so weakening its power is more likely Still need 3/4ths of states. Can see it being weakened if the House and states had a multi-party system and it wouldn’t be seen as benefiting one specific party

I don’t find him offensive as someone with Caribbean background but I can definitely see where people got the wrong idea.
(Also, TIL, Michael Jackson wanted to play him which would’ve made this discourse 10x worse lmao)

Well…. old black and white cartoon characters like Goofy did take inspiration from blackface minstrel shows but I don’t think that’s really relevant to Jar Jar. Like I said, I don’t think this was Lucas intention at all. Sometimes, characters just don’t land well.

I don’t believe this was Lucas’ intention at all but a lot of his work is inspired by old Flash Gordon serials and the like which had thinly-veiled racial stereotypes as characters so I wouldn’t be surprised if it unintentionally affected his character designs.

The thing is that more Americans are unaffiliated with any party than ever before and yet, Americans have gotten more partisan.

Parliamentary systems and republics aren’t mutually exclusive. Ireland, Germany, and Italy are examples.

Party registration doesn’t really mean anything outside of allowing you to vote in some states that are closed primaries.

Upper chambers aren’t that rare in democracies. What’s more unusual is the perfect bicameralism and the malapportionment together. Australia’s Senate has both but it’s also elected through proportional representation and doesn’t decide who controls the government.

The Senate’s existence had little to do with slavery. Arguably, it was a bigger issue with the creation of House (3/5ths compromise).

Fwiw, most voters aren’t dues paying members of parties in other democracies too with membership declining.

Which is why the whole idea of needing the minority party’s support to fund the government is stupid. It’s especially bad when one party fundamentally believes government works and the other doesn’t creating a skewed dynamic.

Oh, I have no issue with parties. Just want to make sure the right terminology is used. It’s a common mistake for people to conflate parliamentary with proportional representation or multi-party systems. Three different things.

Parliamentary systems can have two-party systems. They are not opposites. The number of parties have nothing to do whether a system is presidential or parliamentary.
