So Trump’s FAA flew this plane right into the worst of a storm injuring two dozen people. Why the hell wasn’t that the lede here?
The N.T.S.B. report, released late Tuesday, suggests that while the pilots had been on the lookout for bad weather, the incident caught them off guard. The pilots had turned off the seatbelt sign after flying the plane through some moderate turbulence. It does not appear that they turned it back on when they noticed a pocket of bad weather near Creston, Wyo., which they asked air traffic control for permission to fly around, to the right. Instead, the controller suggested they steer clear to the left, a suggestion the pilots accepted, figuring that course would keep them above any problems. But the turn appears to have sent them straight into the worst part of a storm, according to radar images in the board’s report.

I'm not completely persuaded a shutdown is going to materially change anything but I can't imagine a more negatively polarizing counterargument than this.

For many on the left, that’s no better than Republicans holding those seats. I think that’s a strategic mistake and bad reasoning, but it’s definitely a real factor." But the reality of Mr. Trump’s deployments in Washington has also not matched the stark “invasion” rhetoric of some Democrats, who have raised the specter of an uninvited occupying force in their cities. Indeed, Republican governors who have so far declined to ask the president for an intervention in their cities might be tempted to rethink that stance. The supplementary forces in Washington, provided by and funded by Mr. Trump, have had a noticeable impact, at least in the short term. Washington’s mayor, Muriel Bowser, has softened her tone on the deployment, crediting it for “more accountability” and a reduction in some crimes, particularly carjackings. Even in Chicago, which Mr. Trump has said may be next in his crime agenda, the signals lately have been mixed. Brandon Johnson, the city’s progressive Democratic mayor, has stood resolutely against his streets being “occupied by federal troops,” but his police chief, Larry Snelling, has struck a softer tone. If the National Guard were to flood his city, Mr. Snelling told reporters last week, he hoped that with better communication, local and federal forces could “find some type of balance” and avoid “an adversarial environment.”

In one striking example, the maps would be redrawn to combine Shasta County, a conservative area in rural Northern California, with one of the nation’s most liberal regions, Marin County, just north of San Francisco. Democratic voters along the coast would outnumber those in the Republican inland areas.

“Why did Texas Dems even bother going back?” 1. Because around a dozen are single parents. 2. Leaving Tx for 30 days means state can go to court and declare residency abandoned, so another week and a half, TXGOP still would’ve been able to pass the maps

Not sure there is anything more on brand than declining to endorse a candidate because she refused to repeal a law preventing council members from voting on laws that they financially benefit from.
Which leaves the incumbent, Alexis Mercedes Rinck. On too many issues, the board disagrees with Rinck. The Times supported a common sense proposal to reform the council’s ethics rules. Rinck opposed it, and, on the dais, linked it to actions of President Donald Trump — a cheap move that is wearing increasingly thin

So I think most college-educated liberal people have a sort of knee-jerk reaction to RFK Jr. and his arguments about everything from vaccines to fluoride, and sort of his orientation towards science and public health. And I think that reaction is a combination of fear and dismissiveness. I mean, you’re a doctor who’s worked with a variety of populations, and, you know, you’re supportive of vaccines and public health, and yet you wrote an article that I think might surprise some people.

And then the track's racing equipment suffered a catastrophic failure: The doors on the outside stalls of the starting gate opened before the rest, giving two of the six horses a big head start before the other stalls opened. After a 10-minute delay the stewards ruled the race would be a no-contest. Longtime track announcer Dave Rodman went on the public address system to say all bets on the first race would be refunded. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are wagered on a typical race in Maryland, so incidents like this are disastrous. I’d never seen a starting gate failure in person before. This should never happen at a Triple Crown track. (Amazingly, the exact same thing happened at Pimlico the next day. Geez, Louise.)
