$400 for the machine and controller would be industry shaking pricing, especially if they made it retail, but I don't think Valve would be willing to eat that much of the cost.

$500-$600 for the machine on its own would still be great for what it is. I think that's the realistic optimistic range.

People have such a visceral knee-jerk reaction to the term "AI" now that genuinely useful AI technology that has nothing to do with large language models or unethical data scraping or replacing of jobs ends up in the crossfires.

I totally get it but please understand that machine learning =/= LLMs.

Some encouraging news on the recent Google sideloading debacle.

Jumping through extra hoops to sideload is still annoying but this does give developers an option to still develop for Android outside of Google's ecosystem and for users to sideload on-device.

Breaking: Google is easing up on Android's new sideloading restrictions!
Google has announced it is building a new way for 'experienced users' to install Android apps that haven't been verified.

My problem with getting proficient at any skill is whether or not I'll get good at it in before I get bored and lose interest. I was obsessed with chess for months and just when I was getting somewhere with it here comes the boredom. I'm hoping my brain will circle back around to it someday.

This was a fun little deductive puzzle. Took me 10 mins to solve today's one.

(I don't do logic puzzles often, lol)

The replies in that thread were overwhelmingly negative, and rather than engage with feedback he locked the replies.

Microsoft has demonstrated it's going ahead with turning Windows into AI dogshit no matter much users tell them they absolutely don't want any of it. Windows is a lost cause.
Can’t see any reason for sw engineers to choose Windows with this weird direction they are doubling down on

So odd because Microsoft has building dev tools in their DNA… their OS doesn’t look like anything a builder who wants OS control could choose

Mac or Linux it is for devs

A PC is a much better value proposition than a console, in light of how much more can do with one over a console.

Still, I hope the pricing is still competitive, because consoles are essentially just really locked down PCs.
Yeah the Steam Machine may cost more than the PS5 or Xbox Series X but it'll also cover the largest library ever and last you much longer as long as you're willing to turn settings down for some games.
Like, you're tellin me there's gonna be a box where I can play ancient stuff I bought from the 360 era no problem AND eventually the new Sony shit, plus indies for sickos & even some old third-party Nintendo exclusives? The PC library no longer being gatekept by needing to build one is huge.

Someone's made a gameboy port/redesign of Zelda's Adventure from the CDI in the vain of Link's Awakening and I think that's such a cool idea. I was aware of the two side-scrollers on the CDI but had no idea there was also a more top-down traditional game.

I'll be frank with you, I don't fuck with GenAI even a little bit. I don't care how fun a game is, if I catch wind that it was used in place of human work I'll drop the whole thing. I dropped Tribes over its AI banners, I dropped The Finals the minute a friend clued me in. Its a line I won't cross.
