End.🧵Regardless, "Riotous Life" is a story with the proven writing and artistic pedigree to be expected from Paul while experimenting with an interesting breakaway from the series' more typical freeform presentations.
November 14, 2025 at 3:24 AM
🧵I would describe my only real "gripe" as being these panels that break formula. I don't dislike them, what I dislike is the fact that it kind of feels like for the distinct format, there's room to push how these could be present. Thus the earlier comment about "unrealized potential."
November 14, 2025 at 3:24 AM
🧵 The tale follows a fairly typical setup for this trade, Concrete and the gang going out for a nature trip. However, almost immediately the unique stylistic choice help to highlight strengths such as dense panels with alot going on and a lot of detail.

🧵 "Riotous Life" is an interesting technical experiment, repeating the use of a three panel page layout for it's whole story. I don't think that it reaches it's full artistic potential, but it's still quite good and creative in some places.

🧵 In the end, the final decision Reyes is just utterly grim. He takes an extreme action that may just be the thing to stop the consequences of what he's done, but it's a hell of a satisfying bad ending for a character. Very bleak, but not needlessly so or in a fashion that feels unearned.
November 13, 2025 at 3:35 AM
🧵There was a looking sense of thinking "how will this plot be resolved?" and a sense of naivety in believing that some amount of victory could still be salvaged by Reyes, but the series really does hammer home that he's out of options and upper hands or ways to stop the bleeding of a bad situation.
November 13, 2025 at 3:35 AM
🧵There's alot to appreciate here. Reyes' decline is quite brutal to witness, especially as the walls close further and further around him. He's basically been defeated and is trying to ink out an escape with whatever he can after being stripped of damn near everything.

🧵 Gonna try to keep this brisk and spoiler free as much as possible. With that said, God what an ending. I was really trying to wrap my head around how a single issue could tie everything together succinctly and satisfyingly, and I have my thoughts
November 13, 2025 at 3:35 AM
🧵The persecution of The Hieronists feels suitably grim along with the guilt Reyes feels for allowing himself to play a role in letting this happen. It's pulled off with ergonomic use of page real estate and as usual excellent writing by Paul.
November 12, 2025 at 2:27 AM
🧵The consequences of Reyes attempt to play a proverbial "speaker of God" are realized when Leuchet finds out and does a power play of his own. Plot developments skewing further and further down until finally reaching the worst case scenario one could anticipate from a setup such as this.

🧵 Gifts of The Night's third issue successfully pulls off a number of climactic turns. Mini-series format being what it is, there can be a unique struggle to fitting everything in properly, but by this issue everything feels very carefully measured
November 12, 2025 at 2:27 AM
🧵 The developments in this issue take on some interesting directions, prominently reminding me in particular of Frank Herbert's Dune in the way that Magdin's supposed precognition is used as a political tool, influencing and is influencing major players in the world.
November 11, 2025 at 4:17 AM
🧵 It's going to take some restrain not to want to show nearly every page of this comic, but John Bolton's art is really that good. The continued use of visualized figurative language makes several pages a feast for the eyes and even develops a unique storytelling language of its own.

🧵 Issue 2 of Gifts of The Night runs with cementing a status quo established in the previous issue in terms of tone, plot, style and storytelling and keeps the ball rolling with a great followup issue. It really feels like it found it's footing.
November 11, 2025 at 4:17 AM
🧵 Paul's writing in this made great strives in distinguishing itself away from Concrete's traits and tropes. It has a unique and great voice of its own, with poetic language used in dialogue and narration. It is just, rich. I think that's the only appropriate term I could think of.
November 10, 2025 at 1:23 AM
🧵 There's a really great visual motif repeated throughout of figurative language being translated into imagery. It helps to give the story and oddly dreamlike effect and flourishes a story introducing itself with somewhat grounded elements.
November 10, 2025 at 1:23 AM
🧵First thing that can't go without being acknowledged at once is John Bolton's artwork. It's suitably fantastical for the work, capturing some that just feels whimsical and storybook like. I particularly like the look of the character outlines, reminding me of Richard Case's art.

🧵 So I've decided I'm going to try covering Gifts of The Night here for a change, one of Paul Chadwick's other works with artist John Bolton. Let me just say, I am quite astonished by how different it is and how much there is to talk about.

While this is an account dedicated to Concrete, I wanted to highlight another work of Paul Chadwick's I recently picked up. Gifts of The Night is a collaboration between him and John Bolton for Vertigo. I may talk more about it anyone wants.

Much to my embarrassment, I copy pasted the prior day's text without removing it's description. Had to delete and repost to fix the discrepancy.

Gonna keep it short since "Steel Rain" is as brisk as it is, but I like the way it explores the relationship between Concrete's beliefs and the environment around him in a way that isn't strictly speaking ecocentric. I love his newfound agency.

November 6, 2025 at 3:45 AM
End.🧵 Getting back into the actual plot, I do like the way that the subtext of the story's theme in regards to environmentalism is woven into the plot so organically. It really elevates what would be a typical stroll with Ron through the neighborhood without compromising that aspect creatively.
November 5, 2025 at 5:08 AM
🧵 It's kind of difficult to talk a lot about this one without just outright spoiling the whole plot. Though as usual, Ron's mental observations are always a treat to read through. Paul's character writing is always so great about bringing mundane or uneventful scenes to life with some flavorful text
