The first two movies I was ever employed on, full-time, were Fred Olen Ray spectaculars. I was assisting the editor, Bill Shaffer, just after he had done HCH. He knew even then that it was a classic in the making.

I think if you didn't know what the source material was, you might be 3/4 of the way through the movie before you even suspected Vineland might be in the mix. I say that as someone who's read the book at least four times (and seen the movie once). I love both, but they're very different.

We just watched Part 1 yesterday; can't wait to finish it. The surprise for me was how much he had actually done before going all in on avant-standup, including some legit queer indie cinema.
