We used 10 year follow up data on the same cohort to identify specific hormonal decline in male donors that associate with poor health status. This supports that specific male hormones may decline with poor health, rather than with aging, per se, as generally believed.

Hormonal birth control had a wider impact than anticipated on steroid levels, profoundly repressing estrogens, progestogens, and androgens and significantly increasing glucocorticoids compared to not only post-menopausal women, but also premenopausal women not taking birth control

We found that nearly all steroids exhibited sex or age-related variation between 20-69 years

We also saw that many of cohort were no longer healthy based on our original definition or had developed specific diseases. Applying a biological ageing score between these groups revealed significant differences at both time points - understanding the underlying biology is the focus of ongoing work

We observed expected signs of ageing such as increased BMI and blood pressure, compared physiological measures over 10 years, and studied evolution of antibody responses including exposure to new infections.
