Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.

Not exactly - Doug Dohring bought neopets (the website) and founded Neopets, Inc, which he structured like a Scientology org.

So Scientology definitely had a big influence. Doring sold to Viacom, and remained as CEO for one year after that.

I'm definitely interested in React and JS stuff!

I've never gotten more than two likes on a post, so I think it'll scale enough for any need I'll realistically ever have.

Actually I think just sending each other letters would suffice. I might just call a friend, tomorrow.

Ikr. Reading my social media feed should just be an HTML frontend for "bluesky --read --sort myalgo.json". And the "bluesky" command is just a shell script that loops through a text file of domains I federate with, and checks them with curl

(I'm jk but it *would* be kinda cool)

I learned Rust for a job but I never found it "fun" like I did almost every other language I've learned. Elixir had the same problem, we just lacked chemistry.

I regret that, because it seems like every cool new thing is written in Rust.

This is what I'm going to do instead of working (hard to get contracts over Christmas)

but not normal Urbit. A custom Urbit runtime, that just compiles everything to Visual Basic 5. Why?

Because the original onion URL for Silk Road was silkroadvb5piz3r.onion and the mnemonic to memorize this was "Silk Road Visual Basic 5 Pizza". I've never used VB prior to .Net but ya know, #FreeRoss

I'm going back to Dr Racket fuck it. If I need Python I'll just write a bunch of macros so I can code Python in Racket. JavaScript? Macros.

In fact, I'll make a language out of macros where all Python syntax is valid and also so is all JS syntax. And it compiles to fucking Urbit. Ha!

This sounds like a screed against justice but it's not - I'm unsure how to reconcile these often opposing virtues. Not just in a political sense - even moreso in my own personal life.
December 21, 2023 at 6:43 PM
Enforced neutrality. You must be observed to never explicitly support anything, lest the other side find out and punish your family.

This is why rural Mayans were so supportive of the brutal Montt regime, a mystery to Western observers. Peace was sweeter than justice.

Here in Guatemala this happened during the guerilla. Snitching on neighbors as collaborators (either for the government or the guerilla) as a means of scooping up their property, or eliminating rivals, etc.

Militias and insurgents all too eager to resist even the most minor dissidence.

The thirst for justice is never quenched. But on the other hand, we still need to respond to injustice.

I'm okay with deplatforming, but I dislike how it grows in scope until merely nonconforming thinkers get chopped.

The righteous always go too far. Like Christian moms in the 80s - okay, ban "Satan Teaches Rape, a kids picture book" but soon enough they're after Narnia because metaphors are idolatry

Blessed among tent women is Jael,
wife of Heber,
Sisera asked her for water,
she brought him milk.
Once he slept, she reached
for the hammer and tent peg
She struck Sisera, she crushed his head,
shattered and pierced his temple.
At her feet he sank,
he fell; there he lay - dead
