I'd say cringe is not what some people think it is. Stede (in most situations) is not cringe. CJ is. And Izzy. And Nigel.

Izzy’s proved he can and will lick boots to get revenge, he can and will try and kill the object of Ed’s affection multiple times, he can and will kick Ed while he’s down, and he can and will call that “loyalty” and act like Ed should thank him for it

A huge tropical fish tank, yes. Which they both hate maintaining. But Mary dives into rage cleaning it every time she gets frustrated about Stede. Stede discovered audiobooks and needs to occupy his hands with something while listening and daydreaming. The tank is immaculate. The fish are not happy.
