I get to the local barcade, The 1-Up, about 6:15, a little early. There are a few of these around, but the ones in downtown Denver and Boulder are infested with hip college kids in jaunty hats so...

Conan: Spawn of the Serpent God is fun enough, but just kind of runs right through you.
CONAN: SPAWN OF THE SERPENT GOD
Critic Chuck Klosterman has this great bit in an exhaustive piece about KISS where he reviews every single album they ever put out, in a paragraph or so each. When he gets to their solo albums after.....

The Unsung Sword of Conan - Savage Sword of Conan #68: "Black Cloaks of Ophir"
With The Unsung Sword of Conan, I'm trying to highlight under-appreciated works in the Conan canon.

Conan has gotten a little better at thieving since The Tower of the Elephant!
Chronologically Speaking, Part Six: "Rogues in the House"
Chronologically Speaking  is a series focused solely on chronologizing the Conan of Cimmeria stories. It's an analysis of only the text of Robert E. Howard's original Conan tales. I'm examining the...

Had a wonderful time chatting (remotely) with a 7th grade class in Colorado as they prepared to write their first ever film reviews (of Coppola's "The Outsiders," after reading Hinton's original novel). Lots of curiosity and eagerness about criticism, and a young Scream fan too.

I've got a new blog post up about Roy Thomas's first real Conan the Barbarian epic: "The War of the Tarim." This was really fun to put together and I think some of my better writing. Please let me know what you think!
Roy Thomas's CONAN THE BARBARIAN: A "War of the Tarim" Retrospective
1970's Conan the Barbarian title starts out a little weird. As young Conan putzes around just outside of Cimmeria in the first three issues, it's near-universally considered to be a slow start to one....

@jimzub.bsky.social and Alex Horley's CONAN #25 is EXCELLENT. A celebration of Conan and the immortality of stories themselves.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #25 is a must-read
I don't really do a lot of what I think of as "reviews" on this blog. I know a lot of times my writing about Conan stuff verges into review territory, but I usually think of them as essays. I try to.....

Conan: Cult of the Obsidian Moon dovetails REH’s “The Garden of Fear” with Conan well enough, but it’s much more of a straight fantasy than sword & sorcery
CONAN: CULT OF THE OBSIDIAN MOON (and THE GARDEN OF FEAR)
I will stop short of saying that Robert E. Howard was obsessed with the idea of ancestral memory, but I will at least say that he was preoccupied by it. The concept of reincarnation, and the...

@foldablehuman.bsky.social Hey Dan, do you have a video that comes to mind as your best-executed video? Or any that you feel like didn't turn out how you wanted? When you put out Mantracks I got the sense that you felt that one had come together exactly as you wanted it to

Despite a beautiful painted cover, "Conan the Barbarian: The Witch Queen of Acheron" is seriously hampered by miserable interior art.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN: THE WITCH QUEEN OF ACHERON
I don't think I'm super picky when it comes to comic book art. I know folks for whom small variations in art can completely make or break a book: they'll buy one just for the art or they'll drop it...

What does Conan the Barbarian mean in 2025?
Are you familiar with the concept of a frame narrative? There are a few different uses of the term, but the one I mean is essentially a story-within-a-story. Let me illustrate with one of my favorite....

What do we do about Robert E. Howard's racism in 2025? I'd argue that we should look to Jim Zub and Roy Thomas's examples.
Jim Zub, Roy Thomas, and what to do about Robert E. Howard's racism in 2025
The current Conan the Barbarian title from Titan Comics did something recently that really surprised me. Jim Zub, its author, has frequently set stories in the periphery of canonical Howard classics:....

Savage Sword of Conan was always told out of order, like someone remembering stories around a campfire. Here's my attempt at putting all 235 issues into a chronological order.
