The paper Le Canard Enchainé ran the headline “On a Marchais sur la Une” (we’ve got Marchais on page one) a play on the Tintin “On a marché sur la lune” (we’ve have walked in the moon).

And I was very excited to have gotten the reference.

I remember this was a small story in France when this stopped getting enforced, and the head of the French communist party, Georges Marchais, could visit New York for the first time.

My understanding of the rationale: participation in an organization with a stated goal of overthrowing the constitution is disqualifying for entry. Somewhat akin to the now moot insurrection clause in the 14th amendment.
