Where does airport expansion fit into the Government’s zero carbon vision? Along with refusing to rule out the Rosebank oil field and failing to retrofit homes fast enough? I’m glad they’re still pursuing electricity decarbonisation, but this is hugely undermined by their other actions.

Here in the UK, nothing is publicly announced until every vote is counted. It means longer waits for results but avoids misunderstandings over changing margins as more votes come through. I was shocked when I first found out that US elections have running totals and media calling races early - wild!

I do agree that a government shouldn’t obsess over daily polls. But I’m not surprised that those of us used to two-party domination are finding them so fascinating and sharing them around. Also, the rise of the Greens represents a rare bit of hope for many of us against the horror of Reform.

Fair point - if the government had focused on creating meaningful change rather than chasing Reform in the polls perhaps they wouldn’t be so unpopular now. But on the flipside, highlighting the rise of the Greens could be helpful in pushing Labour to be bolder and more progressive. We can only hope.

But the polls do matter. Research shows that lots of people would like to vote Green, but have always assumed they wouldn’t win and so cast their vote tactically elsewhere. The higher the Greens rise in the polls, the more people see they’re actually a viable prospect, which changes that equation.

Of course the solutions to our problems are complex and challenging, and I’ve never heard Zack suggest otherwise. The Green Party has detailed policy on all the key issues facing the country, developed over years. Zack’s just found a more effective and punchier way to communicate those policies.

Also worth noting that this is just his opinion. Green Party policy is decided by the membership, not by the leader. So this would only become policy if it was voted on as a motion at Conference, which I think would require a more detailed proposal that answered concerns like yours.

He has clarified since then: he doesn’t advocate leaving NATO right now, he suggests building a new alliance to replace it that’s based on peace and diplomacy. And only leaving NATO when that alternative is in place. No idea how feasible that is but worth understanding his whole position I think.

Yeah, that’s true. We’ve been definitely lacking this perspective in the political media in England and Wales though.

I’d love to hear him speak to @cathobbs.bsky.social from @weownit.org.uk about renationalisation of public services.
