I am deeply concerned to hear of the #NorthSea collision between an oil tanker and a cargo vessel. My first thoughts are with the vessels crews and their families but as a marine biologist from #Lincolnshire I am also very worried about the impact on vulnerable marine species.

A fantastic few days on the water with my marine biology students @exetermarine.bsky.social thanks to Cornwall IFCA.

I'm so grateful to have such a great class of students, all so passionate about our ocean.

What does a #Christmas tree look like in a marine biologist household? Full of sea creatures of course!

Dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) can make significant energy savings by bow-riding according to a new study.
Read the paper here:

Video shows dolphins I filmed bow-riding the RV Tangaroa earlier this year.

Could this be the longest recorded Humpback #Whale migration ever recorded? A male whale has been resighted off #Tanzania in 2019 after first being seen off #Colombia in 2013. Read the study here: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...

I love that my job enables me to experience incredible #wildlife. Like this leopard seal in #Antarctica, who checked us out whilst we were deploying seabed cameras.

Later, this same seal punctured another boat and we had to rescue the occupants!

A fantastic day at the NHM in London yesterday, examining their collection of deep-sea sharks (Apristurus spp.) in preparation for some exciting student projects projects. Thanks to Curator of Fishes Diego Vaz for all your support.

Feeling really good having just spent two days at the NOC as part of the Royal Society Ocean and Marine Science Policy Primer, learning great ways to integrate policy influencing skills into my lectures to allow my students to make their science matter! @exetermarine.bsky.social

#Sharks have been leaving calling cards (their teeth) in our ocean for over 400 million years. Like this modern White Shark tooth which we just trawled up from over 3000m deep during our Ocean Census Bounty Trough expedition. Incrdible! 🦈

As ocean explorers we are lucky to be able to see areas of our planet that no human has ever seen before. The excitement is palpable as we dropped our towed cameras below 4000m deep today.

I can now reveal we are setting sail on an exciting expedition to explore the deep-sea environment of the Bounty Trough to the east of New Zealand! This incredible @oceancensus expedition is in partnership with NIWA and Te Papa and sailing aboard the RV Tangaroa.

Today I was lucky enough to visit the #deepsea in the #PiscesVI submersible as part of the #OceanCensus mission to discover new species in Macaronesia.

Our submersible is exploring the reefs of Radazul, in Tenerife as part of the Ocean Census Macaronesia expedition - can’t wait to see what samples they bring back! #OceanCensus

We’re on expedition again! 🌊🔬

This time we're part of the first Ocean Census expedition to discover marine species here in Macaronesia.

Joining 30+ experts, a technical dive team and a submersible team, we’ll be uncovering the secrets of the deep off Tenerife 🇪🇸🌊
