Dozens more pregnant and postpartum women have died in Texas hospitals since the state banned abortion, our analysis shows.

As the maternal mortality rate dropped nationally, it rose in Texas by 33%.
Texas Banned Abortion. Then Sepsis Rates Soared.
ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis is the most detailed look yet into a rise in life-threatening complications for women experiencing pregnancy loss under Texas’ abortion ban.

About 1/6 of the total population of Serbia protested government malfeasance today. In the US that would be more than fifty million people.

Happy International Women’s Day!
Happy International Women’s Day. 🚺

I stand in solidarity with all women around the 🌍 fighting for their right to be treated equally.

A special shout out today to all my fellow female academics in the 🇺🇸.

Gender equality is not a state, it is a constant fight. 💪

Merz the “impassioned European” who for months now has been pretending that European law does not exist, who is eroding basic principles of the EU and even wanted to push laws through with the far right that go against European law. Maybe time to update some public images.
From @constelz.bsky.social: "Merz, an impassioned European & lifetime Atlanticist, told a national television audience...it would be his “absolute priority” to help 🇪🇺 “achieve independence from 🇺🇸”

Again to get to say this, you have to mess up monumentally, & we have:

Svolik is so useful for understanding why people support leaders who subvert democracy. It's not that they lack awareness, so pointing out that democracy is in decline doesn't work. People trade off democracy when it collides with their partisan interests.

Polarization versus Democracy | Journal of Democracy
Why do ordinary people vote to return to office undemocratic incumbents? New survey experiments in several countries suggest that many voters are willing to put their partisan interests above…

The most striking result from yesterday’s German election #btw2025 🇩🇪:

🔹 35 years after reunification: The GDR is redrawn on this map.
🔹 The AfD won 45 out of 48 electoral districts in the East.
🔹 In some parts of Saxony, they came close to 50%!

Why is this happening? Here’s my take 👇

On Ukraine, the United States now votes more in line with Russia than even Algeria. In the entire Middle East-North Africa region, only Sudan and Israel took the American-Russian view and voted No. Most instead abstained or absented themselves, a few backed Ukraine.

A great thread on Germany’s election today!
Here is what to watch out for in the 6pm exit polls:
1) does the CDU cross 30% & how large is the gap to the AfD?
2) is there a majority of seats for a CDU-SPD coalition? This is the easiest (but by no means easy) coalition to negotiate.
3) are FDP and BSW in or out?
4) how well does die Linke do?

🇺🇸🇵🇱🇭🇺 I'm afraid that all the expert output about the rule of law crisis in Hungary/Poland being a consequence of these countries being "young, not yet fully developed democracies without a long history of developing trust in institutions" is about to age very badly.
