Every time you see that the government is trying to raise our military spending to 5% of GDP, think about the fact that our total elementary and secondary school spending is 3.9% of GDP.

I don't really think Osborne should be open to traffic...

Wouldn't it make more sense if that entire stretch from confusion corner to Assiniboine or even Broadway was just a pedestrian thoroughfare?

I'm not a city planner. I don't know the logistics of this, but it's what I would like to see.

I calculated change in access to jobs by transit before and after Winnipeg's bus network redesign. 🚍

The median resident experienced an increase of 4% in access to jobs within 45 minutes, according to my analysis in R.

The redesigned network gets more people to more places within the same time.

My favourite sentence in the #winnipeg budget (so far):

"The City's next multi-year budget cycle includes significant tax supported shortfalls starting at around $150 million in 2028 to $174 million in 2031. The next Council to be elected in 2026 will tackle this challenge. ”

Fun fact: trans people who have had related surgery have a certificate saying we don't have donkey brains.

Do YOU have such a certificate?

If only the chair of the public works committee realized we need more connections like Wellington Cres. They should talk to this Janice Lukes person.
Her comments are very insulting and tone deaf after her and Mayor Gillingham delayed the installation of the bike lane on Wellington Crescent.

The City has known for years that the library needs safer infrastructure on the 4th floor. They know Community Connections and safety hosts have a proven record of improved safety and deescalation. They are consciously withholding funding for adequate maintenance and staffing of the library.

The shuttering of community connections being a single sentence buried deep in the article is a travesty. There need to be very clear lines drawn between a line item in the budget and this man’s death.

A good reminder that Community Connections was killed by Scott Gillingham and Evan Duncan not for failing, but for succeeding at something they didn’t want — making Millennium Library more welcoming to, and a better service for, poor and marginalized Winnipeggers. They *want* to push people away.
More Security guards wouldn't have helped ANY of these situations. Any actual obvious preventative measures have been ignored, as has the Library union and community groups desperately calling for the Community Connections space in the lobby to be reopened (closed due to being... too successful?)

And thats if those appointment-based crisis workers even functionally exist!

If Gillingham had any compassion for this man, or for the staff and patrons traumatized by his death, it’s hard to see evidence in his blame-shifting. None of these things address the concerns raised, or would help anyone in crisis. “Community crisis workers available by appointment” is a sick joke.

Someone at @winnipegfreepress.com was just looking for an angle to make Millennium seem dangerous in a particular kind of way, when we keep seeing evidence that the most significant dangers there are to marginalized people, and due to low staffing and removal of community supports

TW: self harm

Hey @winnipegfreepress.com why is this in your stub about an apparent suicide at Millennium, when the more relevant fact to mention is that others have attempted and succeeded at jumping from the same place before, and the city has refused staff demands to address it?

This is why Mayor Gillingham and Councillor Lukes are slow-rolling the Wellington bike lanes — they don’t want us to ride.

This is it.

It's easy to criticize the redesign, but ultimately it was a project of rearranging scrabble tiles that are all Es. I'm sure there are competent and well intentioned planners at Transit, but you can't design your way out of insufficient funding.
Dear #Winnipeg,
The transition to the new #transit system isn't working for everyone. Yet this is an incredibly overdue re-alignment of routes, bringing us into the 21st century (25 years after it started).

What's the problem?

Janice Lukes would like to make sure you know the 270 day delay is her idea, but she’s lying when she says this is normal. The public service report says this is atypical of a pilot.

So Janice Lukes’s Public Works committee has found another way to delay action on the dangerous conditions on Wellington Cres, this time because they’re pushing the public service to consult with property owners for an incredible 270 days before implementation clkapps.winnipeg.ca/DMIS/ViewPdf...
