Huge congratulations to Harvard’s Naomi Oreskes for winning the Volvo prize! She is a pioneer in unmasking the financial interests and methods behind climate science denial.
I’m proud to have published with her how Exxon knew exactly what they were doing.

Is there a 'please unroll' BOT on @bsky.app already? I would love to have this thread in one go with hyperlinks and everything!
I was recently invited to present my thoughts on the role of universities in the #climate crisis

Several audience members asked that I share my slides, so I've decided to post them here too as an open resource

I'd love any feedback, & for you to share examples of projects & best practice.

The US keeps damaging the planet, just on a different level?

Casino economy. Techno-bros. Inequity.

Tax. The. Rich.
The richest man on earth owns X.

The second richest man on earth is about to acquire TikTok and his family could soon own both Paramount and Warner Bros.

The third richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The fourth richest man owns The Washington Post.

See the problem here?

What are we waiting for at @stockholm-uni.bsky.social ?

It's so demoralizing trying to teach and have the students asking everything to ChatGPT. If, by chance one asks them to put laptops away, they complain that it wasn't specified in the study guide.
Fellow academics, I'm doing it. Going all in. Pulling the plug, literally.

This is on my syllabus for Spring 2026: "This is an analog class. No Canvas; this syllabus is your guide."

All readings are printed books; hand-written exams; no laptops. #academicbluesky #Highered #academia #Rutgers

1/2 for those experts on #DataScience and manipulation. I have some data in zarr format, the original data comes from MatLab. With this data I need to do some linear algebra (matrix multiplication) but the zarr breaks at 3.6 Gb.
What other data structures do you recommend?

Well... This could be any kidnap scene from modern Mexico, in which cartel hitmen arrive dressed like police officers, even their cars.

The ONLY difference is that cartels wouldn't let you film.
Just thinking about that old saw: what if this were happening in another country— where the leader of the nation deployed military and paramilitary and wannabe military onto the streets of its capital to lawlessly detain citizens—how would our leading press cover it?
NEW: Wearing masks, no ID, unmarked & blacked out cars, refusing to say what agency they’re from and using profanity with any press & public nearby.

This was at 14th & R in Washington DC, this morning (Sunday).

What the hell is happening to the US?

#GansterEconomics

Simil to the leaders of nations making war.
"Countries signed these loser deals because they offer the illusion of stability. But Trump doesn’t want stability. When he lacks leverage, he creates it by knocking his opponent off-balance. In Trump’s gangster economics, you never shake down a mark just once: You keep coming back."

The most persistent delusion is that Ru can be satisfied w a partial win in Ukr (territory and/or forced Ukr neutrality) and then cooperation can restart. Ru wants the West’s destruction. It’s not powerful enough to achieve it but it won’t stop trying if the West were to become more accommodating.

No one can stop SpaceX and its owner Elon Musk. I don't say this with pride, on the contrary it worries me massively that they will get away with damaging the environment and 'invading' Mexico territory without any repercussions whatsoever.
