Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath recently met with a top official from Turning Point USA to discuss creating chapters of the conservative youth organization in all of the state’s high schools, days before Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick promised $1 million in campaign funds to help bring the project to life. The meeting between Morath and Turning Point USA Senior Director Josh Thifault took place on Nov. 3 in Austin, according to records obtained by The Texas Tribune.

One tidbit that is incredibly worrying: how far does Abbott's order go? Can Galveston maintain its sign on I-45 declaring the island as "The Birthplace of Juneteenth"?
The city’s legal team is working with the department to understand what else may violate the rules including “Welcome to Galveston the Birthplace of Juneteenth” signs placed at the city’s entrances, ghost bikes, memorial tributes and crosses placed along roadways, Maxwell said. The department declined to answer whether keeping those up would violate the governor’s direction. The city will take down anything that would put the city out of compliance with Abbott’s direction, Maxwell said.

I struggle to describe how odious Secretary Hegseth's false idolization and mythologizing of the American soldiers at Wounded Knee is. The 'battle' largely comprised of indiscriminately firing on men, women, and children, and many American deaths resulted from friendly fire.

Also, it is deeply weird to me as an American whose country was founded on religious liberty as one of its bedrock to have a "secularism minister." Isn't that just establishing secularism as the state religion? It's giving the weird cults of the French Revolution.

President Donald Trump said the FBI “may have to” get involved to end a walk out by Texas Democrats over redistricting. During an unrelated event, Trump was asked whether the FBI should “get involved” in the quorum break. He answered that “they may have to” and “it almost looks like [Democrats have] abandoned the state.” “I know they want them back. Not only the attorney general, the governor wants them back,” Trump said. “So a lot of people have demanded they come back. You can’t just sit it out. You have to go back. You have to fight it out. That’s what elections are all about.” Earlier Tuesday, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn called for the FBI to help “locate and arrest” Texas Democrats who left the state on Sunday afternoon.

This is probably the most precise two paragraphs to explain why Democrats lost (and keep losing) on trans issues. Read the whole thing!
Yes Trump ran hundreds of millions of dollars in ads attacking Harris over past statements supporting trans rights, but on the Democratic side, there was no argument in return. Harris and other prominent Democrats seemed embarrassed to even engage on trans issues as Trump ran roughshod over the electorate with blanket attack ads. The word "trans" was not in any of Harris' stump speeches. It was only uttered twice during the 4 day Democratic National Convention. Dems in 2024 had already pre-capitulated on trans issues. By not engaging at all, by not bothering to make an argument back, by being embarrassed at addressing the whole issue, it signaled to the electorate that you had something to hide, that maybe the attack ads were true. That's why they landed.

Befitting his status as the youngest and least seasoned politician on the stage, he spoke first. But as Talarico recalled the story of Jesus’s cleansing of the temple, when he ejected the money-changers and merchants from the Lord’s house, he didn’t sound like a man inclined meekly to wait his turn to run for higher office. “To those who love democracy, to those who love our neighbors,” he proclaimed, “it’s time to start flipping tables.” As for the Senate race, Talarico is praying on it. He’ll make a decision this summer, he said.

A teacher in Brevard County bit a child on the cheek after the child bit her finger and kept her job, continuing to teach in the classroom for more than a decade after the incident. Another in Miami-Dade County struck a first grade boy and received a 10-day unpaid suspension, probation, counseling, and a formal reprimand, but was allowed to continue teaching. He retired voluntarily in summer 2023, though his teaching certificate remains active. Elsewhere across Florida, teachers formally disciplined for sexualized behavior toward students, failure to report abuse, domestic violence, and the use of hate speech also retained their positions. Meanwhile, Melissa Calhoun, a high school teacher in Brevard County, lost her job for using a student’s preferred name without parental consent, violating a 2023 Florida law that bars schools from using names or pronouns not aligned with a student’s sex assigned at birth. The law also requires written consent for any deviation from a legal name. Brevard Public Schools said a parent had complained that staff were using a “preferred male nickname” for their child, accusing teachers of “influencing and grooming this behavior.” In a statement, the district said Calhoun admitted she knowingly violated the statute and was given a letter of reprimand. Her contract, set to expire in May 2025, was not renewed, and her teaching certificate is now under state review.

The arrival of Abagail in Mitchell, South Dakota irrevocably alters the tapestry of the town and its deeply interconnected residents. Being trans, and more specifically radically different ways of living while trans, is the lens through which we see our protagonists change and change others. This sounds like only a deep character study, but the ploy creeps up on you and crescendos explosively. Treat yourself, read this, and be prepared to feel things.
