Heating fuels in the USA. Bizarrely, liberal states in the NE USA prefer the most polluting choice, fuel oil, which also emits the most carbon dioxide.

First off, the good news: The world is a much better place than it used to be, especially for young children.

And now, the bad news: After decades of progress in preventing child deaths, the world is now going in the wrong direction in the very worst way imaginable.

Sen. Andy Kim’s fight against a bill seeking to remove most of the authority of New Jersey's comptroller’s watchdog represents an increasingly rare example of a US senator taking a stand against the power structure of his own party.

People have been talking about those outrageously cheap BYD electric vehicles in comparison to American engineering and factories for quite while, but I haven’t seen theory for why they’re so much cheaper than what the Korean firms produce…they are not slouches by any means.

So much of this shit is gambling! Robinhood is fucking gambling! Crypto is gambling! Videogame business models are gambling! It's all fucking gambling! Laws need to really catch up to the fact that the brain can be hacked by this shit.
This is gambling, and we've essentially decided that it's okay to let it go on entirely unregulated for ??? Reasons.

Bad news for Hegseth, it turns out the Pentagon is a big bureaucracy filled with people who got there because they know how to fight bureaucratic battles and they will wait for you to lie about something then leak details about it. Who knew?
A most important question on the Sept. 2 double-tap strike is who had "target engagement authority" (TEA).

Wall Street Journal:

"A Defense Department official ... said Hegseth was the 'target engagement authority,' the key figure who authorized the strike."

Was reading up on trifluoroacetate — among the shortest PFAS/flurocarbon, and sometimes a byproduct of these pesticides the EPA just approved — and it really looks like a contaminant from chemical engineering hell: highly soluble in water and with virtually nil degradation.

Re, Jeffries, “no ceiling:” it feels like last generation’s pitch, about fears of resentful wreckers that would bring the cultural revolution to the United States. I think the professional class is ready for a new idea: leaving these billionaires around is like leaving out a loaded gun.

The bigger change is presentation, historically, these emails were visually chaotic: sudden colour changes, ALL CAPS, screenshots pasted at random. Classic signs of disordered thinking. Now they’re neat, structured, and grammatically consistent. The delusion hasn't changed, but the formatting has.

With children I prefer to clear the airport via BART: given booster seats, the fast loading requirements are stressful. But BART doesn’t get me all the way home and costs as much as an uber. I’m not sure what the policy design is there, but it’s not good.

Not dissimilar to ‘Russia invading Ukraine makes no sense!’

What ‘makes sense’ depends a great deal on the baseline bellicosity of your population and how they view their neighbors

I’ve not had much success with this myself. But here’s my guess….
I do wonder if this is it. WTF is Donald Trump doing w Venezuela? Like we've had US presidents do crazy things. I mean we invaded Iraq and toppled its government more or less for no reason. But as someone who covered that story very closely they DID have reasons. They were bad ...
