Insulting to have to point this out, but if you have spent even 30 minutes reading US history, you realize that every decade has been dominated by racist hysteria that the "new" people won't ever fit in.

This exact prejudice would have been applied to Miller's forebears, when they fled pogroms.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

Ask a few airline passengers: what is your biggest problem with air travel? I'm not sure that the answer will be " people in pajamas."
Sean Duffy: "Dressing with respect -- whether it's a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better which encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let's try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport."

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

1/Catherine Lucey, the White House correspondent for Bloomberg, asked Donald Trump about releasing the Epstein files on Air Force One over the weekend. In response, Trump leaned forward, slashing an accusatory finger her direction and barked, “Quiet! Quiet Piggy,” at her.

Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

"Things happen" sometimes, like when you walk into an embassy to apply for your marriage license while your bride-to-be waits outside, but then you get bonesawed to pieces for having exercised freedom of speech as an US-based journalist and have to be carried out in a series of suitcases.

I often wonder if computers have on balance improved our lives at all. The sheer frustration of having to learn "updated" systems must be taking a terrible toll on our health.

Listen to this BS from Duffy. (Whose aviation-world experience = zero.)

I know 1000 times as many controllers as he's ever met. OK, maybe only 100 times as many.

This is offensive beyond belief.
Sean Duffy threatens "action" against air traffic controllers who didn't come to work during the shutdown: "I'm concerned about their patriotism."

Almost completely, every single problem with higher education that folks think is mainly about something else is <primarily> about the massive decline in state public funding since the 1980s. Yes, including everyone's obsession with getting their kid into the "right" college:

This is my point again that the electorate has no idea of what's actually going on. Not in some ideological way, so you can argue whether it's good or not, just in a fact way.
Recently my brother in law explained what gerrymandering was to a coworker and they didn’t believe him because if that were really happening there would be riots in the street
This week I had someone tell me they're not worried about SNAP being cut off because "that's illegal, so it's impossible Trump could do that, so obviously it's just media sensationalism." Another person told me they weren't worried about ICE because "they can't detain you if you're legally here."

I've really about had it with dilettantes, i.e., people who pretend to be experts but really aren't. Some of them speak and write beautifully, and possess preternatural self-confidence, but that's no reason to believe what they say. Quick check: are they clearly associated with other experts or not?

John Bolton is being prosecuted because Trump hates him. I cannot understand why anyone credits anything in a document prepared by Trump's DOJ targeting his political opponents.

The coverage of this case makes me think we have learned nothing about giving Trump's DOJ the benefit of the doubt.

I'm a fan of conferences without predetermined themes.

Themes let elected leaders boost their own areas of research. Fine.

However, themes can also discourage people working on non-theme topics, especially younger or less-connected scholars who don't know that most of us just ignore the themes.
📣 Submit your abstract for the British Journal of Sociology Conference by Monday 20 October.

There is no predetermined theme, and we invite scholars of all ranks and affiliations to submit abstracts on any aspect of sociology.

Educators should look at AI grading of student writing in the same way collective society looked at the potential for human cloning after the arrival of Dolly the sheep, something that is an affront to our humanity and must be rejected completely. There is no rationale to support this.
