Kids here ride the subway for fun. It’ll be raining and for an activity we’ll take the train a couple stops, then transfer and head home.

We once spent the whole day at the aquarium and the toddler said his favorite part was riding the subway train there and back.
if you're not from or have never been to new york i cannot stress enough how normal the subway is 99% of the time. kids take it to school. everyone is basically chill. you learn to be in proximity with harmless weirdos or minor irritations pretty quick. for all its issues it's an incredible thing

We hadn’t won World War II by May 8th. I know because my family and I were still in an internment camp in Tule Lake, California.

The idea that WWII ended on May 8 would've surprised my grandfather, whose ship was torpedoed almost three months later.

He spent five days clinging to debris and circled by sharks in the Pacific, but I guess we can't expect this guy to care about details like when a war actually ended.
President Trump said that he would rename Veterans Day, on Nov. 11, as “Victory Day for World War I” and May 8, widely known as V-E Day, as “Victory Day for World War II,” so that the U.S. could celebrate its achievements in those conflicts.

The president said he would also label May 8, known as V-E Day for Victory in Europe, as “Victory Day for World War II,” and vowed to celebrate America’s military wins.

When we were little and tried to get out of trouble by blaming someone else, my mom would say: "oh, it's not your fault? you're not *responsible*?" and that stuck with me.

Here's why I'm thinking about that today:

They've moved quickly from "we control all federal money" to "we control any entity that receives federal money" and no reason to think they'd stop there.
“Vera leaders said DOJ revoked $5 million in federal grants that the institute was receiving to develop programs related to reducing recidivism rates and supporting victims… When DOGE members learned that the Vera Institute was no longer receiving federal funds, he started to wrap up the meeting.”
DOGE sought to assign a team to an independent nonprofit group
A representative of DOGE met with leaders of the Vera Institute of Justice, a nonprofit organization that advocates for lower incarceration rates.

I'm feeling that glimmer of... dare I call it hope? from Saturday's protests.

Thank god for our kids, who are simultaneously the reason we almost stayed home, the reason we decided to go, the reason we never made it, and the reason I feel hopeful anyway.
