The birthday card had a creepy "if there's grass on the field, play ball" doodle on it.

Saw that, haha.

I assumed it was like an 18th century event, lol.

Could you elaborate a little? I feel like I can't really tell who's a fighter v. a caver here because it seems that many backroom cavers (e.g. Schumer) are hiding behind a public "no" vote.

Progressives thrive in safe blue district, so if we want more progressives we should be working to create more safe blue districts.

Be loud and engaged always, and hold them accountable in the primary. But during the general election, vote for the best viable candidate, which is, in recent decades anyway, practically always a Democrat. If Americans did this consistently, we'd have many, many more progressives in office.

I genuinely wonder if they think they are punishing us for Mamdani or something?

@joshtpm.bsky.social , re-tell your story about the chaos merchant in high school who kept making messes for you to clean up in the lab.

I don't think people mind AI much on the back end when it's just a calculator. It's when they slap a wig on the calculator and ask us to talk to it.

His ear looks so wet?

I kinda like the first 15 or so minutes of that movie before Jar Jar Binks shows up, too. It feels like they are setting up a pretty good movie, and then it just nose dives.
November 8, 2025 at 7:09 PM
Yeah, that's where it started. Jamelle Bouie said that the mayor of NYC should make at least $500k, so that's where I grabbed that hypothetical number.

I'm not sure what you think I'm saying. The proposal in this thread is to pay public servants more than they currently make. I'm saying that, yes, we should give them a high salary and generous pension so that it's an attractive gig for competent professionals, even when stock trading is banned.
November 7, 2025 at 10:19 PM
Can we add no paychecks for Congress during a shutdown, and that shutdowns impact the duration of employment for their pension?
November 7, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Actually, you know what? The index fund coming from a pre-approved list is also bad. Say it's a Vanguard fund. Well, now Congress is financially tied to Vanguard. That's bad. You're TSP idea is definitely better.
November 7, 2025 at 5:56 PM
I would also be concerned about what constitutes an "index fund." If they can invest in ANY index fund, shenanigans ensue. ("Check out my cool index fund that tracks the price of crude oil!") If the index fund has to come from a pre-approved list, ok, but that's little different from your TSP idea.
November 7, 2025 at 5:51 PM
I believe the proposal is for a very high salary that results in a large net financial gain for most professional class people. My point is that the 529 hit should be more than offset by the salary increase.
November 7, 2025 at 5:40 PM
Couldn't they just roll their 401(k) into some kind of TSP account? Or possibly invest in TSP from within the 401(k)? I don't understand what the problem is supposed to be, or what you meant about "public property."
November 7, 2025 at 5:26 PM
I guess I don't understand why you thought the TSP guy was saying spouses would have to guve up their 401(k).
November 7, 2025 at 5:14 PM
... over into some new investment account. The point I want to make is that they wouldnt have to completely set their 401(k) on fire to disinvest from the stock market.

But yeah, I'd expect the pension to cover spouses, too, as pensions do.
November 7, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Sure. I mean, what I'm saying is that spouses should have to disinvest, too. If the spouse has, say, $1 million of stock in a 401(k), they would have to convert that into $1 million of approved investments. You might be able to do that within the 401(k), or they might have to roll it ...
November 7, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Spouses should be able retain their 401K but reallocate to approved investments.
