Interesting to note that the (UNRELIABLE) 35mm fan-scan that's floating around is somewheres in between the two home video releases in terms of the hue of the moonlight.

Interesting data point: a number of the newer scenes that appear green in comparison to the old transfer are just normally white-balanced now - a fair amount of the old stuff is notably magenta.

(This is your biannual reminder that just because a digital home release has been around for ages doesn't make it accurate.)

Waiting for the /r/criterion "why is it so grainy now" takes.

You can see the dang pixelation/screen door effect in the inserts!

It will never not bug me when I see period pieces not even bother to hide the fact that they're using digital projectors to double for film projectors.

See THE BRESLAU MURDERS, in which they use a modern 1.78:1 screen and projector and don't even bother to matte off the black padding.

Rewatching THE PHANTOM THREAD and I *knew* I recognized that hotel.

I have been alerted to the fact that this is currently what emerges when you Google the lyrics to 'Born to Run'.

The exterior wide shots - my single favourite element - are these bizarre blends of extremely early cinema techniques and cutting-edge digital composites.

Same diegesis. Love it.

Finally made the damn 21st century list. Chronological. Fifteen films from this century that I personally value, because three rows formats better than two.

14. Plac Nowy last year / last night.

12. Some other views of Krakow which, for all the slander I inflict on it with Idziak filters, really is one of the more breathtaking places I'm fortunate enough to have become mildly familiar with.

11. Fun fact: these aren't filtered. This is just what happens to your camera when you enter Krakow's market square. It's science.

10. Scenes from Wroclaw's man-made archipelago on the Oder river.

9. Had a moment of weakness and busted out the tilt-shift in Wroclaw just hours before a pretty horrendous football riot.

My first instinct is that we've got a "prints from separate regionalizations have both survived" case on our hands, but more digging is necessary.
May 26, 2025 at 8:51 PM
So: uh, they uploaded a MOMA restoration of THE STUDENT PRINCE IN OLD HEIDELBERG to the Bundesarchiv, and it turns out it's a Czech-version-of-SUNRISE-level different cut than the Photoplay version. Different takes. Whole beats rearranged. Pacing changes. This is wild.
