Getting Old! Ty Goes on Batting Rampage Against Browns as Detroit Wins One. Detroit, May 6-(By Associated Press)-A record that has been engraved on the books since the mighty Honus Wagner laid aside his bat and glove was erased at St. Louis Tuesday and another by Ty Cobb when he brought his lifetime number of extra bases on hits to 1,456. The previous mark, held by the "flying Dutchman" of the old Pittsburgh Pirates, was 1,448. Up to Tuesday Cobb was two short of Wagner's mark. His batting field day of three home runs, a double and two singles, however, added 10 more extra bases to his total. Cobb also equaled an American league record by making four extra base hits in a nine-inning game. The National league record record is five. In addition to these performances, the tying of the modern major league record of three home runs in one game and the unusual, though not unprecedented, feat of hitting safely on six consecutive times at bat in a nine-inning game, Cobb wrecked half a dozen other marks (all his own.) The day meant for Cobb: Establishment of a new world's record for singles made during a life time. Tuesday's two singles brought the grand total to 2,695. A new world's record for "total bases" hit-5,159 to date. A new American league record for extra bases hit-989 for his career to date. Cobb needs only 10 more extra base blows to top Wag-ner's major league record. A new world's record for total number of hits-3,884. A new world mark for total num-ber of runs scored, the four he made Tuesday, bringing his total to 1,951. A new American league record for total times at bat-9,970. Wag-ner went to bat 10,427 times in the National league. Altogether Cobb holds more than a score of records, most of which have not been even approached by other stars of the game,

Spring forecasts of the baseball prophets re-ceived another jolt yesterday at the hands of the revolting Cincinnati Reds, when they forced Pittsburgh further into the cellar, Luque turn-ing in his second victory of the season, 6 to 2. The Pirates made only four hits. Cleveland, Idle by rain, retained the American League lend. Only one game was played in the junior circuit. St. Louis broke its losing streak of four straight, deluging the White Sox with 19 hits including three homers, to win by 11 to 4. The Giants kept pace with Cincinnati by defeating Brooklyn in the second game of the Greater New York sorles, 4 to 3. The St. Louis Cardinals accomplished the double feat of trauncing the Chicago Cubs and lying them for third place as a result of a clever pitching performance by Dickerman, who allowed only four hits. Rogers Hornsby, National League batting champion, falled to connect safely in four attempts and the new home run king of the Cubs, Hartnett, was unable to turn back one of Dickerman's curves for a hit. Home runs helped the Giants defeat the Dodgers. Wilson and Kelly hit for the circuit. McQuillan was in form for the New Yorkers, Herschel Bennett of the Browns, playing in the place of the holdout Jacobson, got a single, double and home run. He scored two runs and handled four charices in the field. Dixie Davis hurled for the Browns and surprised everybody by holding the Sox to eight hits. Bell, the slugging young third sacker of the Cardinals, got but one hit, but it was a four-base clout. Alexander the great was the Cub pitcher who went down to defeat before the Cardinals. Heine Mueller had a single, double and triple.

CHARLES EBBETS, BROOKLYN BASEBALL MAGNATE, DEAD Dead Magnate Popular President of Dodgers Did Much to Elevate Pastime NEW YORK, April 18. CHARLES H. EBBETS, president of the Brooklyn National League baseball club, died of heart disease in his room in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel at 6 o'clock this morning. He was 66 years old. Seriously ill throughout the winter. Mr. Ebbets came north just ahead of the team which he had hoped to cheer on to victory in the 1925 pennant race. but he was too ill to see a game in the new season. Next Tuesday, the day of Mr. Ebbets funeral in Trinity Church, Brooklyn, baseball will pay him tribute as one of its ontstanding figures. There will be no games in the National League that day, and officials and players of many teams will attend the services. The presidents of the other seven senior circuit clubs, together with Baseball Commissioner Landis and John A. Heydler, president of the National League, will be the pallbearers. A great crowd saw Brooklyn play the Giants in Ebbets Field this after-noon, but the renewal of the peren-nially popular interborough series was noticeably saddened by Mr. Ebbets' death. Just before game time, the two teams, each player wearing a mourn-ing band on his left sleeve, gathered at the plate and stood, with heads un covered, for a minute of silent tribute to the "Squire of Flatbush." as the Brooklyn magnate was affectionately known to New York's multitude of fans. April 17, 1925, Cleveland completed a sweep of the St. Louis Browns that started with their 21-14 win on opening day. In contrast, their final game ended (in under 90 minutes!) with a 1-0 victory for the Tribe.

LOUIS, April 17. - Superlative pitching by Joe Shaute, the Peckville Pole, today gave the Indians their third straight victory over the St. Louis Browns, 1 to 0, and anded the tribal colors atop the American league standing. Shaute was forced to deliver his best brand of throws to compete with Milton Gaston, Yankee castoff, who twirled almost as well as Shaute, but who walked an Indian batter in the first nning and thus planted the flowers for his own funeral. BY STUART M. BELL. After that one tally had crosse the plate, the Indians and Browns battled toe to toe, with the hitters of both clubs going down in order n most of the innings. The Browns nade only four hits, and the Indians ive, the same totals of yesterday eversed. Twice the Clevelanders emerged rom their offensive tranquility, but Gaston pitched himself out of one ight spot. in the sixth, while a ensational leaping catch by Ken eth Williams averted disaster in he seventh. Shaute was forced to bear down on two occasions, in the same innings, the only ones in which the Browns had more than one man on ase at a time. New York, April 17.-(By Associated Press)-Two teams progressed to their third victories in the National and American leagues Thursday by opposite routes. Pitching of an unusually high caliber for the early season carried the Cincinnati Reds to undisputed possession of first place in the senior loop. After two previous displays of defensive strength by Donahue and Luque the former league champions were pitched to a third victory over the Cardinals by Eppa Rixey 7 to 3. All three moundsmen limited the St. Louis team to six hits. In marked contrast to Cincin-nati's method of triumph Connie Mack's Athletics again rescued weak hurling by sheer hitting strength in piling their third win over the Red Sox, 7 to 3. Eddie Rommel got away to a bad start in the first when Boston scored all its three runs, but after that ses-sion he kept the home club away from the plate. The Mackmen du-plicated their opening day's total of 13 safeties.

1925 was a really tough year for the Yankees. They finished with a record of 69 wins and 85 losses – seventh place in the American league, ahead of only one team, the Boston Red Sox, who had been caught in a downward spiral of declining attendance and being able to make payroll.
