Minos was a king of Crete, and the son of Zeus and Europa. Every nine years, he made his defeated rival, King Aegeus, pick seven young boys and seven young girls to be sent to his labyrinth, to be eaten by the fearsome Minotaur.

Time to stock up on snowy, dark reads! 🩷

What happened to Jade Hunter?

When Jade goes missing in the Alaskan wilderness, everyone is shocked. She was scheduled to speak at an academic symposium but never turned up. What was Jade really doing in Alaska? 🐻🐾

"Ten minutes more of suspense. Then, again, loud, sudden, violent, the bell rang! We burst into the room. There he was, standing in the middle of the floor, rigid, petrified. He groaned in in a terrible, husky voice, 'Oh my God, I have seen it!' and fell down dead."

The famous 'Girl in The Flames' photo from 1995, showing Wem Town Hall on fire and a mysterious little girl stood in the blaze, seemingly unbothered.

The girl in question was actually lifted from a postcard from 1922.

"Taking the fear out", an old Cypriot ritual:

* A pan face-down over a fire.
* Think of what you fear, the ritualist's hand on your head.
* Two caged birds close by.
* Water poured onto the pan so it hisses.
* Leap over that and the fire.
* The birds will absorb your fear.

'Darkness' by Lord Byron depicts the world ending as the Sun dies out. The humankind burns fires in desperate fight against the dark, only to accelerate the destruction.

Assumably written in Villa Diodati during 'The Year Without a Summer' 1816.

Happy November 5th - a.k.a. Bonfire Night! 🖤

Marked with fires and fireworks for over 400 years, on this day in 1605 Guido Fawkes was arrested attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament - though he was but one member of the broader Catholic conspiracy...

In the 16th and 17th centuries (and perhaps the 18th C) a weird 'Fiery Exhalation' would sometimes rise from the sea at Harlech. In 1692, it 'set Fire to the Ricks of Hay, Corn & Barns [...] & to infect the Grass, but it was not mischievous to Men though they were in the midst of it".

Creepy Hotel Corridors, Part 7 in an occasional series.

This one is from a hostel in New York that I stayed at for a week or so, which was run by nuns. I didn't see a single nun while I was there.
