I like how your puzzle books 1. Have the mechanics-teaching puzzles be lower-difficulty, 2. Have starred optional hard puzzles which I can pick and choose at my preference, 3. Solutions way in the back of the book so there's no temptation for me to quickly cheat, but still there a fallback in case.

I'm of the same general opinion. Someone phrased it as: A player has certain context info that you the developer don't know. (They know their own skill level, they know which types of puzzles they like to grind out vs. get a hint on, etc.) And so they should get to modulate their own experience.
