Are he and George RR Martin in some kind of literary tontine where the "winner" has to finish the last book in their series?

yeah could have the same issue Halligan has unless the judges reappointed.

I agree that the blame is on the infrastructure owner/regulator/etc, but I am still not sure the examples you have are due to growing populations or greater density. Flint's population is half what it was in 1930. Lack of maintenance of current systems is a different issue.

Have there been any modern instances of systematic failure of water/sewer/gas/electricity infrastructure in a US city because of increased density or population growth? I can't think of any, but it's not something I have researched.
November 25, 2025 at 12:52 AM
Sounds like it worked exactly as the city wanted it to
November 23, 2025 at 8:22 PM
I totally agree, enforcement is a definitely a huge part of the issue in the US

This may be part of it but the share of road deaths involving alcohol is similar in the US to Canada and France so this doesn't explain the whole difference. Too many factors are involved to just look at national statistics and make a diagnosis.

"a fixture at University of Virginia were the periodic student riots" they had all the fun back then.

From the article: "There has been no cat at Jesus since the 1950s. Perhaps this is understandable, as a cat killed the Principal, Joseph Hoare, in 1802". The US could never have this type of quirky murder history.

🫥 the shared use path isn't for bikes? I must have misunderstood. :/
November 21, 2025 at 8:09 PM
Responded! I guess I remember the one talking about different options for the road and this is only focused on ped/bike. Not thrilled about the diverging diamond, but do hope this means they will actually have ped/bike infra and not just space for cars.

Is this a new survey for this intersection or the same one from earlier this year?

Part of me thinks that the risk of missing NFL games reduces the chance of political violence in the US by double digit % points.
November 21, 2025 at 4:07 PM
Almost once a week I remember the 4 month old that was killed on stony point last year. A completely avoidable tragedy, brought about entirely by the county's years of terrible infrastructure and zoning choice. Disheartening that an incident like that doesn't produce revolutionary changes.

That's fair. But there should be some type of training that would improve things. Training also acts as a filtering mechanism. Right now mainly bad actors exit the filter. Could there be training that does the opposite? "training" without specifics isn't worth anything.

Don't forget the AI generated doo-wop covers of 50 Cent songs that Joe is really into now.

This is the canary in the coal mine. The rogan-sphere is the key to understanding American politics from 2016 to today. Its infighting starting this summer was the first sign of cracks in the MAGA wall.

Brain is so cooked in anti-capitalism they want support policies that benefit giant developers over building housing for people.
November 19, 2025 at 4:02 PM
Same. We say "training" but that doesn't mean anything on its own. I believe there are common training philosophies in the US and some are really bad, just not sure how they compare to other countries. Additionally a culture of little accountability plays into and reinforces issues in the US.
November 19, 2025 at 3:30 PM
I don't think that's an indictment of training (because the training didn't materially change), but rather the political and cultural forces around policing in US. Other countries have less of a problem with this so there must be a better path.
November 19, 2025 at 3:27 PM
Same! I find that with the hills around here, the car prefers to let the speed go up to 27/28 before applying the breaks. My cruise only goes down to 25. There may be a good reason for that, but I wish it could go lower.
November 19, 2025 at 2:34 PM
I'm pretty sure I am in the top 1% of "trying to obey every law including speed limits" and I'll admit that basically no trip is perfect. It's very hard to drive a modern car between 20 and 25 for example. The gearing is just not meant for it.

Yes exactly. Some of the people I know moving to this place were very vocally against the development. The irony that they are now buying a $2mil townhouse in it!
November 19, 2025 at 12:02 AM
The development is on the site of the old 60s grocery store strip mall (that people tried to landmark...). It's basically in the neighborhood. These people would never have moved to this place if it was even half a mile away.

Grew up in a rich MD suburb. Big (controversial) development is finally being built with apartments and townhouses. Know at least half a dozen friend's parents who are retired and downsizing there. Opening up houses for young families.
