The latest ChinaDiction is out on Perry Link's new collection of essays, "The Anaconda in the Chandelier," which I highly recommend. If you don't have time to read it, read my review instead (it's free) and spread the word: like, share etc. Thanks!

Kafka at the Gate of Dawn
A collection of essays by sinologist Perry Link is a could-be autobiography, but thankfully it tells us far more about the bizarre cultural evolution of post-'liberation' China than it does Link.

ChinaDiction is out and it's transitioning into a mostly review publication. This week it's the highly recommended The Troublemaker by Mark L. Clifford on Jimmy Lai. Please read, subscribe (it's free and will stay so) and pass on the word.

Saint Jim
The rags-to-riches – and then to-jail – tale of how Jimmy Lai became a billionaire before accepting God and a CCP jail cell is a page-turner despite the hagiographic flaws some critics have seized on.

Given the huge success of my colors of Phnom Penh photo yesterday (a grand total of two likes!), I'm punishing you all with a colors of Bhutan abstract today ... Take that!!!
February 26, 2025 at 6:08 AM
Cycling home from the supermarket, I stopped for these late-afternoon colors because they suddenly reminded of the glowing hues that entranced me when I first arrived in Phnom Penh in 1993 – working for Lonely Planet at the time.

Blacklist all of them. This can't be fixed with diplomatic niceties.
According to the Liberty Times, Taiwanese who have studied at Jinan University in Guangzhou include Fu Kun-chi (law!), Wan Mei-ling (KMT, Taoyuan District 4), KMT Deputy Speaker of Taitung County Council, and Tammy Lai (Terry Gou's VP candidate).

This week's ChinaDiction features a review of Eva Dow's House of Huawei and some musings on TikTok vs Rednote.

I'm of to Bangkok in the morning if anyone is around – let's grab a beer or a coffee.

This week's ChinaDiction ... a review of "The Political Thought of Xi Jinping." Next week I'll be taking a look at Eva Dou's The House of Huawei.

ChinaDiction is free to read, share it around, the effort is not worth it without reader support. Thanks.

I finished the LEGO Milky Way set & I quite like it. It’s best seen from afar, as they took something of a Pointillism approach. Hats off to them for including a great podcast about our galaxy & nice explanations in the build instructions too. 🔭 #lego

In the footage I've seen via Yonhap there's no sign of the plane swerving. It seems to just explode before take off. We won't know what really happened until there's a proper investigation; it seems odd that Yonhap is calling it a collision with a fence without at least a "reportedly" and a source.

Bascially an attempted parliamentary coup. Reverse of what went down in South Korea.

'In a statement condemning the changes, the Taipei Bar Association argued that "the deliberate attempt to undermine the Constitutional Court" is without a doubt "unconstitutional."'

If Steven Bartlett is featuring and promoting reps from companies he's invested in without disclosing that, that should be the story; the representation of heterodox medical opinions over the course of a long-form conversation is another issue, I think.
Disinformation and Misinformation shared by Steven Bartlett in his so-called health podcast has multiple dubious claims, debunked ‘experts’ including Malhotra and people with stakes in wellness including the host who also makes £££ from the podcasts. 😡😡😡🧪
