I mainly lurk, but if I do post will usually be on nuclear physics or radiation & environmental protection & monitoring.

There's no justification to be on Twitter, you will convince no one, there is no glorious crusade, you are simply enabling Elmo.

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

After thirteen and a half years no radiation related deaths or acute diseases have been observed and no measurable radiogenic medical consequences are expected from all of the Fukushima radiation emitted.

That around 20% of the population of the UK have poor literacy skills - skills at a level that impacts on their ability to navigate every day life. In Wales 12% have very poor skills.

The percentage among prisoners is higher.

China might not be wrong on this one!
To be honest, I prefer this to free speech for all (idiots)

“China has officially changed the rules for online creators. As of October 25, influencers in the country must show real-world qualifications before posting about sensitive topics like medicine, law, education, or finance.”

The problem with radiation hormesis is it cannot be legislated for, not in today's world.

100 people exposed to radiation 5 avoided cancer & 1 got it, the net positive against the societal norm is obvious but the 1 person could sue saying you gave me cancer.

Watch the video though it is very good.
Radiation therapy is focused, expose the whole body to that dose you would 100% die.

Everyone knows LNT is flawed but it's the best we have because you cannot know where the net negative effect starts for different people. Implement a system based on hormesis you open yourself to legal nightmare.

Question, how does one actually eat bombay mix in a restaurant?

1) Use your fingers and end up wearing half of it.
2) Nose bag the whole bowl and never get invited out again.
3) Use a spoon and look like an utter sociopath.

This is the real dilemma of the day!

Hi @theguardian.com
Sorry to be a pedant, but I found a minor typographical fault in a headline, so I corrected it for you. You're welcome.

So yea someone should get rinsed or handling needs to be audited, but damn some of the tabloid headlines linked to this ...

They wouldn't generate quite as much outrage if the headline went something long the lines of;

"Shrimps with the same levels of radiation as bananas found in the US."
Indonesia says it is in touch with nuclear watchdog, United States on radioactive shrimp
Indonesia is providing regular updates to the global nuclear watchdog and the United States regarding its probe into the detection of a radioactive element in a consignment of shrimp, Indonesian authorities said on Tuesday.

So much radiation fear in one article.
Whoever raised their eye brows clearly didn't understand free release. Total activity is important weight is irrelevant.

Not sure I agree they'd all be dead, but just a 1 year round trip is gonna give you 0.5 - 0.6 Sv. Ignoring an errant CME or two and the dose taken whilst on Mars, there'll certainly be some poisoning but colonisers are sure gonna learn what stochastic effects are!

Elmo is not a genius.
All the "there will be colonies on Mars in 4-10 years" stuff from Elon is 100% bullshit. There are a myriad of issues, the main being radiation poisoning. Travelers there now would be dead from cancer before they arrived. This is a MASSIVE issue. We are safe here

The question on tweet deletion is coming up alot with the latest exodus and this is what I used when the algorithm shadowbanned me to obscurity.

I wish I'd kept my account there and just said I was over here now, but I'm seeing many friendly faces appearing here on a daily basis which is nice!
This is a free way I used when I closed my account many months ago so you don't give money to those who are having to pay Elmo to use his API.
