Finished my list of all the seasonally relevant movies I watched this October for Halloween season! 39 movies!!

A screenshot from part of the list with my notes on the some of the movies: “Burnt Offerings 1976 First time watch and I feel all the dots collecting between the influences of this film (and book) and the influence of The Haunting of Hill House upon some of the most well known Evil Houses, including later portrayals of Hill House, The Overlook Hotel and Rose Red. I got so passionately in depth about the connections and the incredible themes and how they're portrayed and explored that I recorded about an hour straight of voice memos yapping about it and only stopped bc it was almost 4:30AM and I realized I could talk about it for another hour at least but should really go to bed. Anyway I'm in love with this movie I'm gonna watch it a hundred times. House 1977 My best friend and I didn't meet until we were in our 20s though we have often talked about our younger selves. Watching this movie together made me feel like we got to catch up on having a silly slumber party together as kids. What a trip. What a beautiful, beautiful trip. Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters 1984 The real horror, fascism and entitlement.” A screenshot from part of the list with my notes on the some of the movies: Cloverfield 2008 A rewatch of one of my fave movies of all time, what a beautiful piece of work. watched it on DVD this time with all the bonus features and felt so so inspired. 10/10 as always. Little Shop of Horrors 1986 I watched the original movie in September and it was fine but not something I particularly cared about. The musical/musical movie is so fucking bad it makes me appreciate the original film. Genuinely it's so bad. It's so bad. Audrey honey I'm on my way we're gonna watch the Barbie movie and get you some help. Eyes Without a Face 1960 What a stunning film, clearly deeply influential across the decades. The use of silent film acting techniques, the camera work, the lighting, the conscious use of sound and dialogue, the layers of storytelling, beautifully done. Twice-Told Tales 1963 It was very charming, the first two stories were incredibly compelling! The third story was kind of lackluster in comparison but still a solid performance from Vincent price and therefore I had a great time. Helter Skelter 2012 Another rewatch with my bestie such an influential beloved film. Erika Sawajiri you will always be famous. Teen Wolf 1985 A cozy rewatch. So cozy I fell asleep. Still a great time. Audition 1999 TAKASHI MIIKE I AM IN YOUR WALLS I AM COMING FOR YOU. I hated this movie literally could not have disliked it more. People market this movie as something it's not and it makes me feel kind of crazy. Is it crystal. Is it crystal meth you're on. Goodness the second story tore at my... well, heart. The Kiss 1929 A proto erotic thriller that I am OBSESSED with now. Obsessed. In love. I really wasn't sure how it was gonna turn out. Affairs. Mistaken identity of sorts. Murder. Hot V/H/S/ Halloween 2025 Well that was. Terrifying. Genuinely terrifying. Saw 2004 REWATCH. COUSINS MOVIE NIGHTTTT. GOLDEN AS ALWAYS FUN WHEN YOU GET TO SHARE SAW WITH FAMILY.

Between ‘The Kiss’ and ‘Her Private Affair’ these proto-erotic thrillers of the precode era were the inspiration behind my 3-player story building card game ‘Seven Kisses’ for the 1929 Jam and now I get to actually watch The Kiss with its original synchronized score!

if I'm talking about non-diegetic bdsm, I'm referring to a story that portrays certain kinks without the direct acknowledgement that the characters are doing bdsm. this would be something like Captive Prince, or Phantom of the Opera again, or the vast majority of bodice ripper type stories where an innocent woman is kidnapped by a pirate king or something and totally doesn't want to be ravished but then it turns out he's so cool and sexy and good at ravishing that she decides she's into it and becomes his pirate consort or whatever it is that happens at the end of those books. the characters don't know they're playing out a cnc or D/s fantasy, and in-universe it's often straight up noncon or dubcon rather than cnc at all. the thing about entirely non-diegetic bdsm is that it's almost always Problematic™ in some way if you're not willing to meet the story where it's at, but as long as you're not judging it by the standards of diegetic bdsm, it's just providing the reader the same thing that a partner in a scene would: the illusion of whatever risk or taboo floats your boat, sometimes to extremes that can't be replicated in real life due to safety, practicality, physics, the law, vampires not being real, etc. it's consensual by default because it's already pretend; the characters are vehicles for the story and not actually people who can be hurt, and the reader chose to pick up the book and is aware that nothing in it is real, so it's all good.
