Very old. Retired head teacher and medievalist. Not tiring of London.
Yes we’d love to rejoin - and it will happen - but the situation has obviously been discussed (internally and with European allies) and the difficulties of immediate union are prolific.

Clearly a man who steers clear of the big stores who are all promoting their Christmas lines. Sainsbury’s for eg are encouraging their hapless clientele to sign up for a Christmas delivery slot.

Two more months of this intrusive nonsense yet it’s still British Summer Time. Roll on Spring.

Just a little peek into the lives of “ultra high net worth” individuals. Thanks for the fun!
As a pretty low net worth person, I wonder how long the appointee will last.

We’ve certainly had a surfeit of Kennedy.

Wait till they tell you what subjects they intend to study at university: “An Accountant in the family?”

Lovely idea to get students cooking. Good luck with the blog.
I fear, however, most will end up with what in UK we call ‘pot noodles’ (just add boiling water).

Sorry, this is example of processed food that is not doing any of us good. We need breaks from dreaming up constant meals - I agree, eg the relief of an M and S meal in UK.
But better for all if we promote simple, unprocessed foodstuffs.

Very impressive building - not in an ‘English’ architectural style.

Thank you for explaining so carefully.

You’re absolutely right - the only feasible gvt action is to encourage and support public discourse on the disaster created by Brexit.
Instead we have Mail, Bellylaugh and co pushing the Brexit success story. And to some effect, alas.

Great! My diet excludes eel but I can now think fondly of your medieval eels as (very distant) forerunners of smoked salmon.
Your posts are informative and enjoyable but what on earth sparked interest in eels?
Medieval nutrition? Monastic life? Financial transactions?

Is the signature the scattered ‘capital’ letters? Or would you be so kind as to locate?

I know nothing about football or Rooney, but these statements are naive yet human and reveal a sense of good moral intention.

Isn’t it about time Americans faced reality and stopped bleating on about the divinely ordered nature of the founding fathers? They were intelligent politicians but with human fallibility. Americans talk about them in the same reverential tones as royalists for ‘the divine right of kings’.

Things happen in America that leave the rest of the world speechless. Yet US citizens continue to rationalise the horrific debasement of their country which has been taking place over years. When will they ever face up to the reality of a truly unequal, undemocratic and rotten country?

Carlyle: we ‘50s grammar school girls were supposed to revere him (as the ‘name’ of one of our school houses) but with age we discovered what a right-wing horror he really was. Blocking would be too weak a punishment for the louse.

Let’s not forget that the nineteen-century French novelist Honoré de Balzac is said to have died of coffee poisoning. Not that you have cause for fear since he (allegedly) drank fifty cups a day.

Good. I hope that’s the end of all those American candy stores.

Can anyone explain why there is no public metro/ train/ tram system serving Dublin Airport - only buses.
Trams are all very well but they add to the road traffic so that planners will have to do more to discourage drivers from bringing their vehicles into the centre of the city.

So much better to bray loudly and aggressively as angry men are wont than to cry feminine tears of distress.
This is political misogyny at its most basic.

So pleased that Starmer is using pictures, emotions and slogans.
Please direct to them.

I am happy to see PA or Nurse Practitioner for admin or prescription matters, or minor procedures and advice. But I draw a red line at the idea of PA making a serious diagnosis. How has this happened? Or should I say ‘how has this been allowed to happen?’
June 20, 2025 at 8:58 PM
There was - Friday evenings to be reserved family time. Media types clutched their pearls, horror stricken as ever re Starmer.
Pie in the sky for him, however, as PM timetable became reality and, whatever you think of his decisions, you’d be hard pushed to accuse him of being work-shy.

In France the TV tax (similar cost to BBC licence) is a licence to view tv programmes (on any kind of screen) and to access the internet. If you don’t have a tv set but you use a computer, you must pay full tax.
The UK gvt could learn a trick or two from the French to quieten rabid BBC defunders.
