Cartoons critic, history buff, retired editor, reporter, business and education writer. Amateur dog walker.
I was the census reporter at my paper in 1990, and my editor was excited to find that one little town had gained a surge in diversity since 1980. I had genuine difficulty in explaining to her that they'd opened a prison in 1983. Don't blame reporters for the stories they're assigned to write.

Having done a fair amount of research on the American Revolution, I can say that this discussion between David Frum and Ken Burns is the most enlightening, stimulating, educational thing I've even heard. Can't wait for the series to run!

The commissars remind grocers that, in a communist country, the central government sets prices and policies.

Turner Classic is running the Commitments tomorrow night. It's very funny if you've never run a pub band. It will trigger your PTSD if you ever have. Either way, don't miss it.

It's cool that these poor chimps will be in a nice place, but I can't help imagining two dozen chimps exposed to the radiation at White Sands, and what a single radioactive spider did for Peter Parker. I think we've got the makings for a Planet of the Apes Prequel.

I have a lot of regrets about my marriage, but this Arthur Rackham illustration hung as a poster in our kitchen. I never underestimated my wife's efforts for us and for our kids. She did more than just struggle to make it all work.

More journalists have reportedly been killed in Gaza than died in the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Ukraine combined. It's no accident.

ICYMI, today's CSotD was able to lay out the facts in a nation that is no longer the one you learned about in school. Insights courtesy of some great cartoonists who refuse to shut up and knuckle under. Come have a look:

They can't call it "60 Minutes" anymore because it's too expensive to edit interviews for time. The program will now be known as "As Long As It Takes" or "Redstone Theater."

Escaped slave John Jones buried 2,973 Confederate POWs who died in the prison camp at Elmira, each with a paper slip that gave his name and unit number so he might not be lost. Following the war, only a very few families asked to have their loved ones returned to the South. Memorial Day honors all.
