Well this *entire* thing is that the "enhanced" subsidies that were put in place in the ARA and IRA are going to expire. For folks who were using those tax credits/subsidies, they're going to see their premiums skyrocket.

But even so, this is such an uncharitable reading of the original post. Nostalgia can be a toxic impulse, but there is something to be said about pining for a return to the time when going online was a thing you *did* and then walked away from. Completely valid, vs whatever it is you're doing here.

Sure, there was a time when computers were more expensive, and sure, the "home computer" was something that not everyone had access to. Still, the "home computer" became a lot more accessible to a wider socioeconomic audience before the ubiquity of cell phones.

Willing to bet that their failings probably don't include being responsible for the pain, suffering, and deaths of hundreds of thousands of people to pad corporate profits.

One thing that I'm not seeing mentioned here: the vast majority of European automobiles are still manual transmission. That's changing, of course, but stick shifts still represent the majority of cars on the road.
There's other explanations as well, but that's still a big part of it.
