Hi, I am Mathias and I am a hobbyist photographer. I mainly use my camera for documenting my travels and for silly nonsense.
I would like to use this space to chronicle my transition from my old APS-C camera to a full frame format. 1/4

Like every academic I can see the end of my contract approaching, and I can't help feeling anxious about it. Intellectually I know I'll be fine but that doesn't stop the vague sense of fear.

Anyway, to calm my nerves I've been looking at green photos all morning.

I grew up in central Europe, so seeing a desert for the first time was absolutely breathtaking. The sand flowed and moved like water, and in very much the same way we sank into the dunes as we tried to cross them. I could have spent days watching the ever-changing patterns and waves.

A companion sinks into the soft sand as she tries to cross a dune in northern Colombia. The wind blew the sand into wave-like patterns, except where a half-burried, weathered rock created some ripples. Now that I look at it again, the shading on the rock almost looks like a screaming face. The last scream of an ancient being as it is being swallowed by time? Ripples in the sand. There for a moment, and then gone forever.

Late to the party. On our first day in #venice we slept in, consequently missing all the morning action in the fish market. We only found a bit of leftover ice and a gaggle of hungry gulls begging for food. However, the fish shop next door had the most delicious squid, so all was good.

Venice's fish market in the historic city centre is alive and buzzing in the early morning, but when we got there the last stands had just packed up for the day and left the grand hall to the cleaners and the gulls.

A few early tourists explore Venice's St Mark's Square at sunrise. It was a chilly morning, and I had been out in the cold for hours. For me the early light meant that it was finally time to return to my hotel and get some hot drinks and a breakfast roll.

The sunrise sends its first rays onto San Morco square in Venice. I spent two hours in the freezing pre-dawn cold to watch the sunrise over the lagoon. This was the first time I was committed enough to get up this early to catch the early light, and it definitely raised my respect for and appreciation of people who do this for a living. Holy shit, was I miserable! The photos were worth it, and I would do it again, but still! What a personal sacrifice just to show you the beauty of the world. Thank you to all the professionals who get up early so we don't have to!

The National Monument of Scotland rises against a unifomly gray late afternoon sky. This photo evokes the opposite feeling in me. It is cold, hard, uncaring. It is the quintessential Scottish winter experience for me. This is when the kindness of friends, family, and strangers shines even brighter and makes Scotland such a beautiful place to live. The Irn Bru well on Calton Hill. This is one of the first photos I shared on BlueSky, and it blew up more than I could have dreamt. It's the positive reception to this photo that gave me the courage to share more of my photos. If you're tired of looking at my nonsense, blame all the people who liked this photo in particular. Portrait of an amur tiger. I just love tigers. I couldn't possibly pick four of my favourite photos without including one of the tigers we saw in the Highland Wildlife Park near Aviemore.

This beautiful, lovely amur tiger at @highlandwpark.bsky.social came to give me a big hug and was utterly dejected to find the glass between us unyielding. Oh how I would have loved to cuddle him! And how couldn't I? Just look at these gorgeous eyes! 😍

Light painting with a torch in dark is difficult but it can produce wonderful depth. This was one of the most frustrating photos and took many attempts. More details in ALT text for anyone interested in the process. It’s still not perfect but sharing more ‘not perfects’ is ok too I think.
First mistake was using a reflective drum symbol as a background without thinking how it sloped at the edges so the light literally fell off. Second mistake was then using a reflective plate!! Trying to light using a small torch in the dark (shutter on bulb) is tricky enough but because of the reflections, I had squiggles of light everywhere 🤪 This took a lot of trials … just sharing for anyone who’s interested 🤗
