Russia was expected to defeat Ukraine within a matter of weeks. Almost four years on from the full-scale invasion, Ukraine continues to stand its ground.  Despite Russian claims, territorial gains have been limited. Russia controls roughly 19% of Ukraine, including territories occupied in 2014.
Ukraine, Europe and the new economics of war
By maintaining stability and innovating to hold out against Russia, Kyiv has shown that size matters less in conflict than it used to

In 2025, Russia has taken roughly 3,000 km², but most gains are scattered, operationally insignificant and achieved at a high human cost—far from the narrative of inexorable advance that Moscow has been pushing amid a flurry of diplomatic activity in recent weeks.

I spoke with Any Lucía López Belloza, the Babson College student who was on her way to surprise her family for Thanksgiving when ICE deported her.

"My 5-year-old sister still believes that I might go home for Christmas," she tells me.

This is the first Thanksgiving for Sophie & Colin Hortman without their parents, Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and Mark Hortman who were assassinated along with the family dog in an act of political murder. National guards troops were not deployed to the state in response.

Hang on, a pause is by definition temporary. Permanent is the opposite of temporary. “Permanent pause” is an oxymoron, a contradiction. If you want to be president of the US, don’t you think you should learn English, @realDonaldTrump ?

A new generation of dissident artists is inspiring a wave of solidarity against Putin’s war—recalling the Soviet people who ultimately defeated the Soviet Union.

Homeland Security doesn’t grasp the fact that the first Thanksgiving was about making “room at the table” for European “invaders.”

It’s been an extraordinarily bad week for wildlife in the United States: in a few short days the Trump administration moved to destroy wetlands, accelerate logging, and drill for oil off our coasts and in the Arctic. They laid their cards on the table and the contempt for nature is palpable.

Bomb threats disrupting voting in New Jersey today, which has a competitive governor election.

As with LibsofTikTok and bomb threats to hospitals, the Online Right has seen they can do this to force closures.

Preview of 2026 midterms? Either way, states should be working on plans to deal with it.

Lofgren: Now, instead of the president weighing in, we’ve got him doing weird little dances as he lands in Asia, and he’s missing in action. The Senate is refusing to negotiate across party lines, and the House of Representatives isn’t even meeting. I mean, I’ve never seen anything like this.

Trump is refusing to use contingency funds to fund SNAP — even though his own administration’s guidance said he had the legal authority to do so.

But he’ll find a way to bail out Argentina, conduct extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean, and build a vanity ballroom.

Priorities.

Today, Mike Johnson will keep the House adjourned for the 85th day out of the last 97.

12 days of work in over 3 months.

With full pay and benefits.

The senate has been working, so this is not about the shutdown.

It is about avoiding a vote to release the Epstein files.

Merkley: "What we've seen is that democracies no longer die bc men w/guns go in and take it over. Instead, it's electeds who erode the separation of power. If you have a rubber-stamp Congress & courts that deliver more power to the executive, suddenly you have an authoritarian state. It's here now."
