📢 Benefit cuts don’t have widespread support

Our CEO @claremoriarty.bsky.social's response to UCPIP Bill passing second reading:

This was always likely to be the case 👇 But it's a trap. Of course pre-Timms claimants will be reassessed under the post-Timms system. That's why pre-Timms and post-Timms are going to be virtually identical

We are coming together as organisations committed to fighting poverty, providing advice, and supporting and championing the rights of disabled people, their families, and carers. We are calling for the UK government to withdraw the UC & PIP Bill

The above-inflation uplift in the UC standard allowance is not adequate compensation. Even by 2029, the level will have not get back to the value at which UC was introduced 15 years earlier medium.com/citizens-adv...

Under the 4 point rule, people like Graham* would lose access to all support, and would no longer be able to work

A long thread on why the concessions in and around the UCPIP Bill (ie the disability benefits cuts) are illusory, disingenuous and potentially makes things worse 🧵

There are 5 big myths to bust -fifth is the most difficult to untangle, but the most significant in my view, so please do bear with 🙂

If they had 2 children, they would be £269 per month worse off in these circumstances
May 20, 2025 at 10:50 AM
A couple claimant where one partner loses PIP daily living and UC health, while the other remains in full-time employment, would be £272 per month worse off even if the partner losing their benefits worked part-time for 20 hours per week
May 20, 2025 at 10:50 AM
If they had 2 children, they would be £145 worse off each month if they took up paid work for 20 hours per week, but they would be £112 per month better off if able to work full-time
May 20, 2025 at 10:50 AM
A single claimant losing PIP daily living and UC health would be £114 per month worse off if they worked full-time, and £359 per month worse off if they worked part-time for 20 hours per week, compared to their current income

Spent my morning so far trying to find out who ate the final shortbread

At some point I stopped caring about the truth, just needed the clearance

Here's Alison's story:

There could have been a little more care taken with this chart too. You'd be forgiven, if taking a quick look, for thinking the rise in cost is £40-ish to £80-ish billion. When the actual numbers are already large enough: £50-ish to £75-ish billion

The OBR responds...
November 3, 2024 at 10:47 AM
One final thing... quite startling update from the OBR on welfare spending forecasts. The change to Universal Credit cost models created an opportunity that, as yet, the government has chosen not to use. I doubt this position can hold

The government's plan to implement the Conservatives' work capability assessment reforms will leave hundreds and thousand of disabled people worse off. This from my colleague Maddy Rose on the other place:

Dayrider. A disgruntled DfT official hacks a bus so that every ticket it prints is an all-day pass. The resulting impact on the operating company's profit margins means it must be brought into public ownership

The full uprating of LHA last time did some good but not nearly enough. Look at how the deficits of our debt clients dependent on housing cost support barely moved. Most are still in the red (h/t Tom Hunter)

Let’s talk about Local Housing Allowance, the most important bit of the welfare state you’ve probably never heard of
