Speakers, including Chief Sidney Peters, Chief John Bernard, Associate Deputy Minister of Justice Michelle Higgins, and Chief Judge Perry Borden, spoke about the cultural significance of eagle feathers and the importance of Mi’kmaw culture being reflected in court processes.

Since 2018, Indigenous witnesses, accused individuals, victims and others appearing in the Nova Scotia Courts have had the option to take legal affirmations with a sacred eagle feather. Eagle feathers are used in the same way as a Bible or an affirmation.
