Retired armo(u)r Soldier • British-American • History nerd, esp. the WW1 BEF • No coffee too strong • Go Army! • Death before dismount • Yes Marmite
Having unknowingly mixed some odd condiments into my coffee in a dark Bradley turret, I can relate to this story. In my case, it was catsup powder instead of creamer. Probably like the soldiers in the #GreatWar, I drank my coffee anyway.

Gina looks like such a sweetie! It’s hard when they go because a good dog takes up so much space in our lives. I’ve had so many wonderful dogs over the decades. I believe each has had a gift to bestow. Putzi’s was the treasure of a great heart and a calm soul. This about a week before he died.

You’re welcome. Putzi’s spirit was just like you see in these pictures. He was a gentle soul.

My best friend Putzi. He crossed over the bridge almost a year ago at age 15. I miss him so much.

We have some amazing vistas on the Oregon coast, but this is breathtaking.

Sisyphus worked in a staff shop in a forward-deployed joint headquarters. Every frigging morning with the boulder. Today it’s 20,000 sandbags. Tomorrow, some rocket scientist cut through a 220 volt line with a pick. And 120-slide PP briefings that have to be done yesterday. #Iamsisyphus the horror…

I’m sure you know the old axiom about professionals talking logistics and amateurs talking tactics. Well, I’m reading this outstanding book about the gargantuan effort that sustained the #BritishArmy in the #GreatWar. #fwwhist #fww #WW1

It’s official. The Yuletide season is here. I know because Christmas radio just became active on #Sirius radio!

Charles Waterhouse was a giant of the Corps. I had a dear friend (long gone from us) who was a BAR man in H 3/26 5th Mardiv on Iwo. I gifted him a signed print of “BAR on the Beach” for Christmas one year. He was so proud of that painting!

‘Canadian Cavalry Ready in a Wood’ by Alfred Bastien, 1918, #CanadianWarMuseum
There’s a misconception that horse cavalry was obsolete in the #GreatWar. IMHO that wasn’t the case. The #Canadian #Cavalry Brigade performed yeomanly service on the Western Front in #WW1

I knew of Dr Cook primarily through his books about the Canadian effort in #WW1. He was among the first authors who helped to shape how I view the Great War. My condolences to all of you who were close to those amazing historian.

“Tanks and Cavalry at Arras 1918” by Albert Bastien, #CanadianWarMuseum
The mounted branches in #WW1 are among my specific areas of interest. Showing both horse #cavalry and #tanks, this piece illustrates the changing nature of war. #GreatWar #Arras #WesternFront #fww #fwwhist

“Fatalist” by Will Dyson, “Australia at War”, 1918.

Will Dyson’s created gritty and visceral art. His moving drawings are a window into the combat experience of #WorldWarI.

Dr Cook will always rank among the most influential historians of the Canadian effort in World War I. We are definitely poorer for his loss. He was was one of my favourite authors of Great War history.

“The Morning” by noted equine artist Lucy Kemp-Welch, 1902, Bushey Museum and Art Gallery.

This powerful painting shows a fallen British #cavalry #trooper and his loyal horse. I believe this is an incident during the Boer War. #BritishArmy #horse #Ifyouaintcav

“The Straw Ride: Russley Park Remount Depot, Wiltshire” by Lucy Kemp-Welch, 1918, #IWMCollection

I love horses and am fascinated by the relationships between soldiers and their loyal mounts. Here, civilian horsewomen exercise newly-acquired horses in an arena. #fwwhist #ww1 #milart #horse

So every directional sign in Arlington National Cemetery has the word ‘soldier’ misspelled. I can’t be the first visitor who discovered this mistake.
