I don't much like HD-2D, it feels like those 'this will be Mario in 2014' demos and takes away the fun of pixel art being a limited medium by adding these glaringly modern effects to the mix.

I can't agree. Sprites are awesome and full of character, and Gamefreak hasn't taken much advantage of it, but a 3D environment to run around and spot Pokemon in the wild is cool as hell. I also like much better seeing the move animations with more than three dimensions.
