Bawang Merah means red shallot and Bawang Putih means white garlic. This is similar to other Asian Cinderellas, which have agricultural roots for their main character names. See Korea's Kongjwi and Putjwi, aka Black Bean and Red Bean. (which I adapted in my book: wwnorton.com/books/fcked-...)

Two versions of this tale exist. One is a "Kind and Unkind Girls," where the good girl gets treasure for being modest and kind, and the bad girl gets SNAKES for her greed and cruelty. The other is a "One Eyes, Two Eyes, Three Eyes" type of Cinderella, featuring a fish godmother and a magical swing.
