Biodiversity | Evidence-Policy | Equity…and the complex web betwixt. Working across environmental policy, ecology and governance. Thinking in systems, for my penance. Oh. And birds.
On stolen Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri Country, never ceded.
Hi lovely #AusEcol peeps! Early bird registration is now open for @ecolsocaus.bsky.social #ESA2025, to be held at the end of November on Kaurna Yerta, Adelaide! Very much looking forward to having you all in Rads for a week of ecology and nature conservation cleverness!

Well that was epic, #ICCB2025 folks! Always energised by the intellect and passion and ideas of the conversation community. Thanks so much to all my beautiful friends, and to the organisers for making the week such an inspiring conference. See you in Mexico! @iccb2025.bsky.social

Good mate Ayesha Tulloch supporting her colleague Lin Dai at #ICCB2025, synthesising adaptation actions for threatened species on farms. Important, practical work, delivered with generosity @iccb2025.bsky.social
June 17, 2025 at 1:52 AM
Another brilliant talk at #ICCB2025 by Margaret Fox in Marshall Islands fishery management. Interesting navigating interactions between global conservation aspirations (eg CBD) and local indigenous rights and obligations. @iccb2025.bsky.social
June 17, 2025 at 12:05 AM
Day 2 #ICCB2025 opens with Melissa Hampton-Smith @jcuofficial.bsky.social talking to the inclusion of equity in global conservation policies/frameworks. Sone work to do, with Melissa presenting useful recommendations. Great talk, Melissa! @iccb2025.bsky.social

Michelle Ward talking to cost estimate models for the conservation and recovery of Australia’s threatened species. Really clever stuff for better understanding the impacts of investment in recovery. #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social

@martinemaron.bsky.social squeezing How To Fix Offsets (paraphrasing) into 3 minutes. Exceptionally I might add. Key message for me was applying absolute, rather than net gain, the latter inevitably leading to more loss. Standing room only I might add! #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social
June 16, 2025 at 4:25 AM
Really interesting talk by Jesse McLaughlin @cuny.edu on shorebird flyway governance in the Americas. Focus on informal, non-binding and adaptive arrangements. Lessons to be learnt for other international agreements perhaps #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social
June 16, 2025 at 2:35 AM
Meg Farmer @deakinuniversity.bsky.social at #ICCB2025 talking to the impact of cat management on long-nosed potoroos on French Is, Victoria. Reducing cat density benefits pots, even prior to eradication. @iccb2025.bsky.social
June 16, 2025 at 2:09 AM
Great talk by Jonathon Rutter @ox.ac.uk using acoustics to detect “hidden” seabird-fishery interactions. >60% of interactions not detected using existing GPS, suggestive of a greater impact from small-scale and illegal fishery activity. Great use of novel tech. #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social
June 16, 2025 at 1:53 AM
The awesomeness of Emily Massingham @uq-cbcs.bsky.social on full display at #ICCB2025, talking to the centrally important topic of equity in conservation, and developing practical approaches to enabling outcomes of humans and nature. @iccb2025.bsky.social

Bin Bin Li - incredibly rich plenary, drenched with ideas. Exploring local economics and protected areas, resource exploitation spillover, and community-led risk management. And pandas! #ICCB2025 @iccb2025.bsky.social
June 15, 2025 at 11:34 PM
Ricky Archer gifts us all the opening plenary at #ICCB2025, talking to indigenous-led parks management, and threading together western and indigenous lenses on caring for Country. Great start @iccb2025.bsky.social.

It’s been some time since I’ve anticipated a book’s release as much as this one - finally got my mits on this gem. Can’t wait to dive in. Thanks once again @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social for your words and slow, meandering stories of care and hope.

Really cool study by @clarebracey.bsky.social on woodland birds in protected v unprotected private land. Great science, and super engagement with tons of landowners through NSW (and lots of cups of tea). #ESAus2024
December 10, 2024 at 12:44 AM
Hannah Fraser talking assessment of woodland birds community condition - great work to inform local, regional and national policy and management (and they’re birds so cool) #ESAus2024
December 10, 2024 at 12:28 AM
And hopeful: nature positive is about renewal as it is protection!
December 10, 2024 at 12:13 AM
@hollykirk.bsky.social being here amazing, clever, arm-wavy self, talking on broadening how we define biodiversity value beyond threatened stuff. #ESAus2024
December 10, 2024 at 12:09 AM
This morning’s plenary at #ESAus2024 is the “totally fabulous” @drkyliesoanes.bsky.social - giving advice on working with practitioners to achieve common goals in urban biodiversity (and beyond). From the NW suburbs of Melbs.
December 9, 2024 at 10:04 PM
Morning #ESAus2024! Finally got to see these in the flesh @drkyliesoanes.bsky.social @jacintahumphrey.bsky.social @hollykirk.bsky.social - wonderfully creative, hopeful urban restoration - for people and nature. And swans! Lovely way to start the day.

Anna O’Brien on averted loss offsets: offsets assumed extent loss <240x (!) greater than the counterfactual; up to 86% of offsets did not balance permitted clearance. So important to include good counterfactuals in offset design (or not use averted loss offsets at all) #ESAus2024
