I’d agree with this, except that Andor provides a lot of support for reading Rogue One’s most cloying line as something much more interesting. “Revolutions are built on hope [cultivated through propaganda and exploited by movement leadership].”

Squaring the circle of "how do you protect everyone without immiserating* some" is a maybe impossible task but I view it as anchoring to universal human dignity rather than inevitable trespass against that dignity.

*including the kind of vigilante "justice" murders the post above is advocating.

The most frustrating thing about this is that, if you take abolitionism seriously as an aspiration, you really should be as clear-eyed as possible about the lack of a short- or even medium-term path there. Otherwise you’ve already given up in favor of LARPing!

can’t really express the level of contempt i have for what is just a form of solipsism. “the things that annoy me are the only things that exist and also the worst things imaginable”

This book is an absolute classic that too many left-leaning people skip because of an unfair reputation regarding its prescriptive valence. It’s really one of those “once you read this, you’ll never look at policy the same” books.

At the heart of this is the belief by a lot of elite media figures that, because most people in their immediate social circle are Democrats, they should be able to police the behavior of all Democrats the way you discipline a medium sized social group.

Matt’s argument, at its end, is “everyone to the left of me should refrain from voicing their opinions, be willing to abandon all policy demands, and still reliably vote democratic anyway.” Propounding an unworkable edict to millions who don’t listen to him. What a thing to devote one’s life to!
