I've been a bit quiet on here recently because October was the busiest month I think I've ever had! Most of it was totally awesome with loads of history fun stuff happening. Some of it was a bit sad.
But now, things are getting back to normal!

In May 1898, Conwy had to deal with a drunken sailor...

Beautiful painting of The Upper Gate, Conwy, by Paul Sandby -1790

Thankfully, in the 1850s, the whitewash was removed from the vaulted ceiling panels, revealing the beautiful 15th century paintings beneath.

If you get the chance, do pop down!

It's an absolutely delightful place and cared for by some fabulous people who I met today.

The medieval painted ceiling is something to behold! Every time I see it, I’m in awe. Can you believe it was once covered in whitewash?

A stone church was built here in the 12th/early 13th century, following the traditional Welsh design of two square chambers divided by a rood screen.

The building was later extended after the construction of Edward I’s walled town on the former site of Aberconwy Abbey.

For #MedievalMonday, I popped down to Gyffin, Conwy, to visit the beautiful St Benedict’s Church. This medieval parish church likely stands on the site of an earlier Christian place of worship.

Despite its historical importance, the building fell into disrepair and was largely demolished in 1950.

To learn more about the life of John Williams, a beautifully presented book has recently been published by Vicky Macdonald.

During the 17th century, the house underwent renovations when it became the residence of John Williams, a prominent figure in British politics who played a pivotal role in the Civil War in Conwy. In the house, his coat of arms adorned a plaster overmantel in one of the ground-floor rooms. 2/...

A Lost Gem: The Demise of Parlwr Mawr

In the heart of Conwy, a building full of history was demolished in the 1950s. Parlwr Mawr, the "Great Parlour," was a magnificent townhouse dating back to the late 16th century.
