I had a better midi sound at one point but lost it.

Damn! I guess it's a very human design choice to not have a notification though. Like forgetting to eat a meal and then hours later being like "why am I so grumpy".
You have to feel the hunger, and you have to feel the drag of a slow computer. Promotes a sense of oneness with the machine?

... not sure I would count 2 like this in the UK
November 28, 2024 at 12:10 PM
can it do "am I from Germany"
November 28, 2024 at 12:09 PM
Or to put it another way, I can just clear out the top 1% of my Downloads folder and it will deal with 80% of the problem...

Power laws really don't incentivise me to organise my files well...

I guess death by 1000 paper cuts it is
November 28, 2024 at 10:44 AM
and the intuition, unsurprisingly, is that it follows a massive power law.

Log and linear scales of file rank, vs size.
November 28, 2024 at 10:44 AM
original program I was writing was to try and understand which files are taking up the most space here.

`du -d 1 -a | sort -rn | awk '{print $1}'`

then copy into google sheets to get the intuition
Me: grumbling that my slow laptop that is clearly the result of planned obselence, bloatware and electron apps.

Also me: stuffing my ssd to 99.8% capacity

Single = 'Shield' everything.
Double = 'Dynamic' substitution.
No quotes = 'Naked', so be careful!

seems correct enough to be useful?

so in the awk example, it was failing because $1 was getting interpreted at the *shell* level, not the *awk* level.

why is it I always notice this stuff by some secondary reason - today it was the Quicktime was refusing to screen record.

am I missing some notification?

Anyway! Was fun to cosplay as a @itseieio.bsky.social project for a bit. Will definitely do more websocket things in the future, maybe this time even on an actual server? Idk sounds extreme

When I got home this was what was left on my laptop - I guess the estrogen gang really brought it home.

Anyway I only launched the web toy like an hour before the fiesta. It was a brief flash in the pan! But I guess probably a few 10s of thousands of toppings got added. We made it 240 metres!
November 28, 2024 at 12:23 AM
What was this all in aid of? A poll told me that most people I know have never had a filet o fish. I've also never had a filet o fish. I thought why not try and hold a London meet up for the First Time Filet o Fish Fiesta!

And so why not make a web toy to advertise it?
November 28, 2024 at 12:23 AM
And also I was out in London bridge getting... A fish filet. So to bring it down gracefully and avoid (maybe) getting hacked and all my data exfiltrated, I ended up nuking the Cloudflare tunnel to kill it. Seemed to work? Now that's what I call DevOps.
November 28, 2024 at 12:23 AM
I was trying to get it running as quickly as I could, and as such it was all hosted over a Cloudflare tunnel on my laptop on essentially a development server. All the warning signs of "never ship development servers in production" started bouncing round my head.

Got to about 3/4 of the way up the height of the shard and then the usernames like "fish; drop TABLE" started freaking me out and I bailed
