Express Lanes for Express Trains

San Diego should put tolled express lanes on the 5 freeway to fund speeding up the Amtrak and Coaster to 110MPH and to connect them to the airport with a rail connection.

“Nobody rides the train”

There's a 9 mile stretch of single track here with no sidings for trains to pass. So the Amtrak train has to wait for the Metrolink to clear this section, putting it behind schedule, which causes a southbound Amtrak to have to wait for the northbound Amtrak. Cascading delays.

Finally, the city and MTS should heavily promote taking transit, so less people try to drive. People are already used to taking the trolley to Petco or Snapdragon, this would be a similar experience. And there's opportunity for cute marketing as well

Last year, MTS did run shuttles, but they (predictably) got snarled in traffic leaving people stranded out in the cold. Regular busses also had to be routed away from the park, so people couldn't take normal bus to the event.

December Nights is almost here! It's always a miserable mess of traffic, but there's a simple solution to let people skip the frustration:

1) Run shuttles from the trolley to Balboa Park
2) Temporarily extend the Park Blvd bus lanes
3) Heavily promote this great alternative
