The Kindle DRM stuff should be a wakeup call: don't use Kindles. Get, say, a Boox Reader. Download your ebooks from Anna's Archive or Library Genesis or Z-library. If you really want to make sure the author gets paid, then sure, buy their ebook. Or buy something from an online store that they run.
