And my point originally was that it's ridiculous that it's taking so long to make these changes. Look at how fast Madrid or Valencia has built out its subway let alone Shanghai. What are we even doing? We need to fix the regulatory restrictions that make American subways take so long to build.

What we need is denser subway service in DC (and upzoning around the stations) not more commuter rail and a faster link to a city that doesn't have a subway of its own (meaning you need a Lyft once you get there). I'd rather we spend 20 years making a real change than 10 years barely doing anything.

immigrants don't depress average wages for any group except previous immigrants

embarrassing that we're not doing both automated doors and a metro expansion. truly a 20th century city

If we want more housing, local government has to stop making it illegal or unprofitable for developers to build it.

@leedrutman.bsky.social This looks fascinating. Would love a PiQ episode with the authors! Just a thought

I tried giving his column a shot but it was immediately obvious he was hiding his power level. He's a Deneen-type who clearly wants a theocracy but knows he can't say that out loud. I don't know what I found more offensive, the authoritarianism or the deception.

Authoritarian populists including fascists fetishize low-wage manufacturing as manly and hate the higher education necessary for higher value added enterprises

How depressing that we're celebrating a single sixplex.

The past half century clearly demonstrates that local control of land use and housing abundance are incompatible

In the sense that its candidate got 75 million votes (48%) in the last election, it's a big tent party. The real issue is the two-party system, not Democrats
September 17, 2025 at 5:33 PM
You can't win non-voters over for free, meaning you risk losing actual voters. And it's possible that they aren't being honest about why they aren't voting for you, or don't even know it themselves, so when you adopt their preferred policy they realize they still don't want to vote for you

Is there data on which approach (maximizing base turnout vs appealing to swing voters) is more successful? Have any political scientists studied this?
September 17, 2025 at 5:11 PM
Do you disagree with for example Congress under Biden renaming nine bases which were named after Confederate generals? That seems like a good parallel for your suggestion. I'm trying to understand your animosity for Woke 1.0
September 17, 2025 at 4:52 PM
This reads like mockery of the progressive movement after George Floyd's murder and through Biden's term
September 17, 2025 at 4:40 PM
Maybe its problem is that it's a big tent party in a two-party system and that's a miserable experience because it's impossible to please half the electorate
