A meaningless answer from a meaningless person.
Asked Wes Streeting at the Fabians New Year conference how Labour deals with Trump and the rise of the right across the world

Streeting says: “It’s our responsibility to be the light on the hill for the progressive world.”

I was hoping to be more upbeat and less angry/pessimistic this year but those Musk-buying-Liverpool rumours have firmly finished that off.

It Looks Like a Bombed-out Scene: 20 Palestinian Cars

Torched by Masked Settlers in the Dead of Night
Had a lone resident of this quiet residential street in El Bireh not been awake, the fire could have reached the homes under which the cars were parked

This was inevitable based on where the Israeli government was going with regard to a free press (they don’t want one!) but still deeply deeply bad.

so cool that right as we’re flying past 1.5ºC of warming, we have three climate conferences in a row in authoritarian (at least quasi-)petrostates to ensure fuck all happens to change that

Corporate logic:

You pay us for our product.

But you don’t own that product, we do.

And when that product breaks you can’t fix it unless you pay us more money.

Right to repair laws will fix this scam.
NEW: John Deere is costing American farmers $4.2 billion a year by restricting them from fixing their own tractors.

Apple, Amazon and major automakers use the same strategies on everything you own.

It's bad for you, but excellent for corporate profits.

Are people seriously going to disrupt London today to protest that rich landowners are going to have to pay IHT on inherited land worth more than £3 million at half the rate the rest of us do and get 10 years to pay it?

the lib narrative that many republicans are worried about trump’s cabinet choices is so funny to me. they do not care as long as they can do tax cuts, deregulation, and other ghoulish right-wing stuff.

“We kept dismissing Musk, the ne plus ultra of this trend, as a kook or a one-off. He wasn’t. He was emblematic of a bigger realignment in tech. And unless you were looking … as closely as I was, it was easy to be fooled by the hard-to-grasp and obscure labels these people attached to themselves.”
How the Media Missed the Rise of the New Tech Right
In 2022, I got a tip about Elon Musk, who even as recently as that was misunderstood—and underestimated—by the media: He had embarked on a mission to singlehandedly try to repopulate the Earth with hi...

If the government is counting on growth to drive up living standards then it has a very long way to go before most people feel any benefit whatsoever.

But the US elections are a powerful reminder that the public are not willing to wait.

We could make a dent in England’s housing crisis tomorrow by repurposing empty homes
• +261,000 homes are 'long-term empty'
• When inc holiday & 2nd homes, 1 in every 25 homes in England are empty, +1 million.

Meanwhile, +150,000 children are forced to live in unsuitable temporary accommodation
