From the outside I can never tell how much the LDS community matches the public image (kind, warm, strict, etc) and how much it creates an atmosphere of needing to maintain appearances. I know there is a lot of variance, but in your experience how joyful or inauthentic is the LDS experience?

In California, we had a couple moments that drove us nuts. They had yellow police tape on the playgrounds for what seemed like forever. The most worked up I saw people get was when they said we could attend church, but not sing, but nobody listened and that last for like two days.
