I'm attempting to get better about creating micro-joys as a friend calls them. Today's oatmeal includes saffron, rose water, and pistachio.

Example scaffolding for a native language learner (pictures) and a non-native (pictures and use of translation).
Once people are out of school, we still need to reach them. That's on us, the creators, to find tools besides direct training to help allow inference.

They're synergistic.
Authors can lower the register and provide translational tools for more people to understand - not a perfect system by any means.
We (creators) often do a poor job translating our work and inviting people in. Evolving literacies demand multimodal approaches (ex, text, tables).

Regular literacy is still varied in how we deploy it. Phonics doesn't/didn't work well for a portion of the population and English is a deep orthography - so lots of exceptions. Deaf literacy is another example without phonics. Beyond word reading, there's comprehension and extrapolation (More)

The future of 📊 #DataViz is multimodal.
Technically, data exposition has always crossed modes, but we're able to interweave them now more than ever.
Mixing modes allows more ways for users to validate their understanding - cohesion between modes is key.
