So, this Black History Month, let’s not just celebrate. Let’s demand recognition beyond February. Let’s reject the idea that our history is optional or secondary.

To not know Black history is to not know the United States. The labor, resistance, and creativity of Black Americans are woven into every aspect of this nation’s existence.

They are part of a continuous effort to undermine Black progress. The legal barriers explicitly designed to keep us from thriving were only abolished or transformed in the 1960s, 64 years ago. Yet despite every attempt to diminish our achievements, we continue to rise, innovate, and lead.

The reality is that for most of this country’s existence, laws were (some still are) in place to oppress and suppress Black brilliance. Slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, voter suppression, and mass incarceration—these are not distant relics.

So, no written national proclamation defines, certifies, or permits Blackness to exist, be celebrated, or be recognized. Our history is not granted—it is lived, remembered, and carried forward by us.
